Liverpool supporters will be concerned that they are drifting towards becoming Manchester United after back-to-back defeats under Andoni Iraola.
The Reds are already on their second manager since Jurgen Klopp’s exit, and just as United have struggled to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, Liverpool cannot seem to evoke the spirit that left along with their legendary former manager.
Thankfully, what they have been able to do has been to consistently outclass United in the transfer market. One such occasion arrived this summer, when Liverpool pounced to sign Jeremy Jacquet for a £60m fee from Rennes. Jacquet has gone on to be a sensation at Anfield, with Red Devils’ legend Peter Schmeichel now claiming that he wished the Frenchman had joined Man United instead.
Jacquet might have had a difficult time against Arsenal on Sunday – and an even worse game during defeat to Fenerbahce on Wednesday – but the 21-year-old has otherwise been virtually faultless for Liverpool.
United, meanwhile, have had troubles with Lisandro Martinez in particular, while their own French wonderkid, Leny Yoro, is yet to live up to the hype.
All of that has left Schmeichel yearning for a change, and, as he told CBS Sports Golazo, Jacquet would have been one who he tried to sign for Michael Carrick’s team.
“I’d like to see some defenders coming in in January,” said the former goalkeeper. “That would be a godsend.
“There was a lot of defenders in the summer I thought would be well suited for Manchester United. We saw one gone to Liverpool, Jacquet. I mean, he would have been fantastic for this football club.
“I thought that Van Hecke, who left Brighton to go to Tottenham, should have been someone that we should have looked at.”
With Jacquet fully settled and shining at Liverpool already, Schmeichel’s dreams will now never become reality.
