FLEX Finder Week 7: Jaylin Noel, Blake Corum among the best bargain plays

Week 7 brings us four teams on bye for the second time, leaving us scrambling to find realistic options that can score points. And by that I mean: There are five games all week that have an over/under above 48, and one of those games is on Thursday night. Yes, we’re deep in the garbage now.

Rules for this weekly article:

1) I will not recommend quarterbacks — There are plenty of good ones. You’re on your own there.

2) I will not recommend any running back who costs more than $5,000, wideout who costs more than $4,500, or tight end that costs more than $4,000 in DraftKings’ DFS slate — This was an easy cutoff for what a FLEX really is.

3) I consider any player who garners over 50 yards or scores a victory for the column — anything more you get out of that, well, great for you. Let’s set expectations low because we are combing for outliers.

▶ Running Backs

Blake Corum, LAR — $5,000 – Column franchise player Corum has now scored in back -to-back games while generating eight and 11 touches. It’s good that Kyren Williams is complaining about not getting the ball more, but I think the overall trend to watch is that the Rams probably need to run the ball more as a team with Davante Adams out. That means more Williams and more Corum. Williams has tended to be the end-zone guy, but with how often this team is throwing to running backs, I think there’s plenty of space for Corum to still get his.

Kendre Miller, NO — $4,600 — Miller took a career-high 22 touches against the Giants, mostly pounding them between the tackles. To be sure, this is a different week against a road-favored Steelers defense. But the touch upside remains high, and I think Miller has touchdown equity that most backs in this range likely can’t touch, even if they have Charlie Browned us with Tyler Shough tush-pushes all season.

Samaje Perine, CIN — $4,600 – The Bengals beat writers seemed to think there was a real backfield snap share brewing after they ran much better with Perine out of shotgun than they ran with Chase Brown under center against the Dolphins in Week 5. I don’t know that I’d call this a high-ceiling play, but the Bengals have scored 30 or more points in three of their last four meetings with the Ravens and the game has a 48.5 over/under. I like having high-touch pieces that are playing in this one.

Tyrone Tracy Jr., NYG — $4,800 — The Giants released Najee Harris and I think it’s very clear that they see Devin Singletary as a passing-downs only player. (He’s played 71 snaps this year and there have only been 13 running plays.) That leaves the Skattebo bounceback play, which we are priced out of, and Tracy. If you take John Harbaugh at his word about wanting to play the hot hand, Tracy is the hottest back they have. Skattebo is also routinely off the field in passing situations, garnering over 20 snaps on passes just once in five weeks before Week 6’s bagel. The Giants – though I think they are better than this – are 10-point dogs in Houston. I think all of this reads out as Tracy having the best chance to produce in this one.

▶ Wide receivers

Omar Cooper Jr., NYJ — $4,100 – The Dolphins have allowed a league-low 5.3 passes per game at No. 1 wideouts – they’re going to try to do the exact game plan the Patriots ran against the Jets last week, where they shut down Garrett Wilson. Except the Dolphins defense is staffed by practice squad all-stars as compared to the Patriots. Anyway, I hold some reservations that Adonai Mitchell might come back and crowd this play a bit, but I think Cooper’s a good bet to produce.

Jaylin Noel, HOU — $3,900 — Am I going to back down now? DeMeco Ryans has already said Tank Dell will play this week. Marvin Harrison Jr. is going to get a playing-time boost after having a full week to practice with the team. But Noel has gone 3/85/0, 5/41/1 and 4/107/1 in the last three weeks without an incomplete target. So while we can talk about his playing time getting cut, he was already doing it on not enough playing time. Let the column’s franchise player continue to cook, I say.

Kendrick Bourne, ARI — $4,000 – I don’t particularly love this matchup, even if the Broncos defensive backs are a bit banged up right now. But Bourne has 16 targets in two games since Marvin Harrison Jr. was made inactive and traded away. He’s literally the most major piece the Cardinals added on offense under Mike LaFleur this offseason now that Jeremiyah Love has either been tossed down the hole Ozzie Smith went down in the softball episode of The Simpsons or managed to hurt his ankles in such a way that he doesn’t want to play, whichever feels truer to you. So, yeah, I have no choice but to believe he will be proof of concept for this offense.

Konata Mumpfield, LAR — $3,200 – The first of two punts I like this week, Mumpfield went for 4/93/1 in eight targets during Los Angeles’ SNF loss to the Broncos, a game where they did not have Puka Nacua. This time they will not have Davante Adams. It’s all small sample size theatre with Mumpfield, but he also had 13 targets in two games without Adams in Weeks 16 and 17 last year before the Rams rested starters in Week 18. He’s been mentioned as the closest thing to an Adams replacement they have. The underlying Rams offensive numbers are still plenty good. Mumpfield is a logical gamble at this price.

Ja’Kobi Lane, BAL — $3,400 – He immediately returned to a 4/40 line, and now has eight targets in 58 offensive snaps this year. The Ravens should have Lamar Jackson back … we think … and Lane has the preseason hype to overcome a wrist/IR stint. I will trust the process yet again.

Giants RB picture in flux after Harris' release

Kyle Dvorchak runs through the best running back options for the New York Giants following the release of Najee Harris earlier this week.

▶ Tight ends

Mark Andrews, BAL — $3,900 – Listen, I hate this play. You hate this play. We all hate this play. Unfortunately, the Bengals are allowing 90.2 yards per game to tight ends, even after the last tight end they played was “Greg Dulcich.” Mark Andrews is thoroughly washed, but he can be washed with seven catches this week instead of three.

Tyler Higbee, LAR — $3.500 — The void of Adams targets continues to haunt the column, and Higbee is stuck doing an unsatisfactory Terrance Ferguson impersonation. The Raiders have allowed an above-average 8.3 targets per game to tight ends this year.
