One flag call with four seconds left turned Sunday in Denver into a forgettable day for the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, minced no words about it.
Mahomes went 30-of-41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, but the Chiefs lost 28-24 to the Denver Broncos in Week 8 after a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped out what would have been the game-winning touchdown.
Brittany questioned the flag soon after, and so did Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. However, the fans are divided over whether she has a point.
After Jonah Coleman’s 5-yard run put Denver ahead 28-24, Mahomes moved the Chiefs from their own 44 to fourth-and-goal at the Denver 1 with four seconds remaining. Kansas City got into the end zone on that snap, but Moore was flagged for a false start, which wiped out the score and moved the ball back 5 yards to the 6.
Replays showed Moore turned his head toward Mahomes and made a slight movement in his stance as the play clock ran down.
Brittany didn’t wait long to respond to the flag that took the touchdown away, writing, “You can’t tell me you call that on a game-winning TD, oh wait yeah I can ’cause it’s us.” She added, “The weakest call I have ever seen. You can’t tell me otherwise.”
Reid also had doubts of his own about what the officials saw. Asked about the flag in his postgame news conference, he said, “I didn’t see it. That’s one man’s opinion. I just didn’t see it. I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see [a] false start.”
Action Network host Kendra Middleton weighed in on Brittany’s rant, writing, “This is a joke, right?”
One fan sided squarely with the Chiefs superstar’s wife, writing, “Brittany Mahomes is absolutely right.”
Another fan went after the call itself, saying, “She’s not wrong.”
The pushback, meanwhile, focused less on Moore’s movement than on who was doing the complaining. One fan wrote, “No way Brittany Mahomes is complaining about refs.”
Another fan reached back to a Super Bowl, writing, “The Chiefs literally won a Super Bowl because of a comically weak defensive holding call against the Eagles. Spare me.”
This fan wrote, “She’s so brave for speaking out. You go girl. I speak for all football fans when we say that we wholeheartedly agree.”
Meanwhile, Moore, the player at the center of it all, kept the focus on himself after the game.
“I mean, I’ve just got to be better. I still haven’t gotten a chance to look at it, but, regardless, I’ve just got to be better,” he said. “With [the game] being so tight, the situation that it was, it just hurts even more.”
The erased touchdown left Kansas City with its second straight loss, dropping the Chiefs to 5-2 and into second place in the AFC West. The 6-2 Broncos took over the division lead with the win and now sit a half-game ahead.
