England U15s protect referee from fuming opponents in wild World Cup scenes

England's Under-15s found themselves at the centre of another controversy after a contentious penalty decision in their FIFA U15 World Cup clash with Bolivia

England's Under-15s were embroiled in further controversy after a disputed penalty award in their World Cup encounter with Bolivia. Their South American rivals declined to contest a stoppage-time spot-kick, resulting in the Young Lions securing a 3-2 win. The official, who promptly sounded the final whistle, was then confronted by the Bolivians, with the England squad rushing to shield him.

The referee judged a challenge on West Ham's Emmanuel Famokun to have taken place inside the penalty area. The Bolivia squad and coaching staff insisted the contact had occurred outside of the box.

The referee was encircled, and one coach strode onto the field to indicate where the infringement had happened. Several cards were shown but the decision remained unchanged.

Consequently, their goalkeeper positioned himself against his right-hand post and allowed Famokun to convert the penalty without opposition. England's squad celebrated nonetheless, while the Bolivians again vented their anger at the match official.

They mockingly applauded before one headed straight towards him, causing the England players to sprint back and try to defuse the confrontation.

The referee produced a red card for the substitute who had attempted to confront him before he was led away as hostilities escalated between the two teams.

England's players were seen further inflaming tensions with their beaten rivals by celebrating directly in front of their bench, with FIFA officials stepping in to defuse the situation before the two teams were eventually separated.

This follows an incident just days ago when the U15s abandoned their match against the Republic of Ireland amid allegations of racist abuse.

The game was called off with Ireland ahead 4-1 after an England player accused an opposition player of making a discriminatory remark.

The FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival is a new tournament founded this year as part of the international governing body's commitment to promote youth football.

Azerbaijan have been hosting the inaugural event, which kicked off on October 22 and wraps up on Saturday, October 31.

Over 3,000 players representing 189 FIFA member nations have taken part, competing in 8-a-side matches with 20-minute halves.

England have claimed victories against Nicaragua, Montenegro, Cambodia, Zimbabwe, El Salvador and Georgia, while suffering losses to both Zambia and Turkey.
