The Indianapolis Colts are on the wrong side of .500, and they have several players who could become popular trade candidates. Considering the Colts, who just fired their longtime general manager Chris Ballard, don’t have a first-round pick stemming from last year’s Sauce Gardner trade, adding draft capital could become of supreme importance before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Central among those figures is Quenton Nelson, a three-time First-Team All-Pro who’s in the final year of his contract, and may be eager to join a contender.
Now 30 years old, Nelson is an eight-time Pro Bowler and has excelled in both pass protection and as a run blocker. Almost every team likely has some semblance of interest in the potential future Hall of Famer, here are the five teams that make the most sense.
The Las Vegas Raiders need to open up some running lanes for the sixth overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Ashton Jeanty is averaging just 3.2 yards per carry, but the team ranks 31st in the NFL as a whole, averaging a paltry 3.0 YPC. Who knows what the rest of this season holds for the Raiders, but it’s clear this team is closer to competing than many expected, and the offensive line is still a problem. Nelson would help patch up the interior in a hurry.
After a cold start, the New England Patriots’ offense has heated up as of late. But that doesn’t mean they may not run into more problems later. One area that’s become a concern is the offensive line, which has had to start eight different players thus far. With Mike Okwenu out for the season, the Patriots could solve their left guard problem by trading for Nelson, who, despite his expiring contract, could become a mainstay for years to come.
Another team with a lackluster offense that hasn’t lived up to expectations is Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos. They also have a left guard playing on an expiring contract, though Ben Powers is underperforming. As a result, Nelson would provide a quick plug-and-play replacement who would be an immediate upgrade, helping provide a boost to Bo Nix and a struggling rushing attack.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed two of Quenton Nelson’s former offensive line teammates, with right guard Will Fries and center Ryan Kelly, who has since retired. They also have former Vikings Daniel Jones and Cam Bynum (who could be another Vikings trade target), who likely have discussed what life is like playing for Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota. Nelson would replace the injured Donovan Jackson at left guard (even though Joe Huber is filling in admirably), but how the Vikings would re-align their OL later on is still a question, but not a bad one to have.
Perhaps the most desperate team that could be willing to give up the most for Nelson is the Green Bay Packers, who have had to add multiple players from outside the organization to fill key roles along the offensive line. While they’ve already signed Laken Tomlinson and Kevin Zeitler, Nelson would be a big upgrade over both, immediately providing a jolt to the Packers’ rushing and passing game.
