Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick have all experienced the enormous pressure of managing Manchester United, with the club now facing another managerial crisis.
Ten Hag arrived from Ajax in 2022 with a reputation for attacking football, having famously guided the Dutch giants to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
His first season at Old Trafford brought a third-place finish and Carabao Cup glory, before United defeated Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final.
However, inconsistent performances, questionable recruitment and an eighth-place league finish eventually contributed to his dismissal in October 2024.
Amorim replaced him but was himself dismissed in January 2026, with Carrick subsequently inspiring a remarkable turnaround to secure Champions League qualification.
Unfortunately, that progress has completely unravelled.
United have won just two of their opening 12 competitive matches this season, with Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth extending their winless run to eight games.
Many expected Carrick to be sacked immediately, but United have decided to give him another opportunity, with Saturday’s visit to Chelsea offering a chance to respond.
Nevertheless, potential replacements remain under consideration, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.
Interestingly, Ten Hag recently urged United against dismissing Carrick, insisting that another managerial change would not solve their problems.
Now, the Dutchman has revealed receiving approaches about returning to management himself.
Speaking to Voetbal International, as relayed by Voetbalzone, Ten Hag confirmed that clubs have approached him about returning to the dugout.
“I have been approached as a manager, though. But I am very selective,” he explained.
According to the Dutch publication, Ajax were eager to reappoint Ten Hag following his Manchester United dismissal in 2024.
Feyenoord also approached him after dismissing Brian Priske in February 2025.
However, Ten Hag rejected both opportunities before eventually accepting Bayer Leverkusen’s offer, only to be dismissed after three competitive matches.
The 56-year-old subsequently returned to FC Twente as technical director in February 2026.
Ten Hag admitted he occasionally considers managing a major club with outstanding players, although he currently has no desire to rush back into coaching.
