Aaron Boone will be back as the New York Yankees manager in 2027. However, this week an insider for the team pointed out that a comment from the manager on Wednesday shows he will never bring the club a 28th championship.
While there was speculation after the Yankees’ elimination from the Divisional Round that Boone’s run in New York might be over, the organization confirmed this week that the 53-year-old will be back for a 10th season in the Bronx. Much to the chagrin of many fans.
There are quite a few teams around MLB that would gladly take a manager with the resume that Boone has. He has a 790-565 career record. Boone has missed the playoffs just once in his nine seasons. Has been to the American League Championship Series three times and the World Series once.
However, this is New York. The standard is much higher, and a reason why it’s so high is that Boone has had some very talented rosters, including the slugger Aaron Judge, for his entire tenure. It is what has frustrated fans for the second half of Boone’s run. Despite some good teams, the Yankees have reached the ALCS just once.
Yes, Boone has a very good record, but he should. The idea of moving on from him and getting a new voice into the locker room that can get the team over the championship hump and end their title drought makes sense. However, general manager Brian Cashman — who got an extension from management this week — loves his skipper, and he’d rather have Boone for another season as a lame duck manager instead of making a change.
Could Boone finally get it done in 2027 and win the franchise’s 28th championship? Sure. The talent is there, and if Judge has another vintage season, they will be a force in the American League. However, a new comment during Wednesday’s press conference shows why that is unlikely.
During a new edition of the Pinstriple Podcast, New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman spoke about asking Boone why his team always seems to lose to clubs with better records — not from the AL Central — in the playoffs.
In response, Boone said, “Hopefully we are that bully, and we’re the best team throughout the season next year and bully our way throughout the season. Until then, I don’t have that answer for you.”
Essentially, the manager is saying I need the best roster possible, that is also playing as well as possible to really win it all. And that is flat-out the wrong answer, as Sherman points out. “Like, a leader can’t ever say I don’t have an answer,” he said.
In a way, Yankees fans pretty much need their team not to win a championship again in 2027 so the team can finally get a manager who can get results without the best players and performances possible.
