Brian Schottenheimer is on one of the league’s hottest seats after the Dallas Cowboys slumped to a 33-30 Week 8 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys, who were heavy favorites for the clash against the Cardinals at AT&T Stadium, fell to 3-5 on the season.
After the game, analyst Shan Shariff did not mince words about Schottenheimer’s competence for the Cowboys job.
During Monday’s segment of “Shan and RJ,” Shariff gave a scathing assessment of Schottenheimer’s Cowboys’ reign.
“Brian Schottenheimer is so in over his head; he’s drowning, and he’s reaching out for Christian to kind of doggy paddle,” Shariff said. “Well, Christian’s got two cinder blocks tied around his damn legs as well. You have a coach and a coordinator that the Joneses grossly overestimated in terms of lack of experience.”
Dallas held double-digit leads multiple times against the Cardinals but couldn’t put the game away. The Cowboys allowed Arizona quarterback Gardner Minshew to throw two touchdowns in the final 2:16 of regulation, including the game-tying score with six seconds left, before Arizona ultimately won on a field goal in overtime.
The Cowboys have not beaten a team that currently has a winning record this season and have lost at home to both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cardinals, further exacerbating their difficult situation under Schottenheimer.
Defensive coordinator Christian Parker has faced criticism, and the Cowboys boast the league’s worst PFN Defense Impact score of 60.6, in stark contrast to their high-powered offense, which has earned a PFN Offense Impact score of 84.5, No. 4 in the NFL.
Schottenheimer has risen quickly through the ranks in Dallas since joining the Cowboys as a consultant in 2022, when he assisted both the offensive and defensive staffs. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 and elevated to head coach in January 2025 after Mike McCarthy’s contract was not renewed.
The Cowboys finished 7-9-1 in Schottenheimer’s first season in charge and missed the playoffs.
Cowboys owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones was visibly frustrated at the end of the game against the Cardinals, but he deflected blame from Schottenheimer while speaking to reporters afterward.
“I will say that a lot of people let Brian down today and so for whatever criticism we want to have of Brian, we can all get in line,” Jones said. “That was a total team effort out there for us. And we have to be better for our fans, we have to be better than that when we got our hands on a win and then drop the ball.”
The NFC East remains wide open, with the New York Giants leading the division while Dallas, Washington and Philadelphia all sit below .500. Even so, the Cowboys have yet to turn that opportunity into sustained momentum under Schottenheimer.
