‘Welcome to the League Moment,’ ‘This Is So Disrespectful’ — NFL Fans React to Trey McBride’s Viral Trash Talk With Cowboys’ Caleb Downs

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride didn’t need a lead to question Dallas Cowboys rookie safety Caleb Downs’ draft status on Sunday, and Fox Sports highlighted the viral exchange on social media.

The Cardinals then rallied from a 24-10 deficit early in the fourth quarter to beat the Cowboys 33-30 in overtime at AT&T Stadium, their fifth straight win over Dallas.

Trey McBride Caught Ripping Caleb Downs

Arizona had punted twice, turned it over on downs and thrown an interception on its first four possessions. On the fifth, with the Cowboys up 14-0 in the second quarter, McBride beat Downs for 15 yards and a first down. The 11-play, 56-yard drive ended in Chad Ryland’s 37-yard field goal, Arizona’s first points.

Downs, a two-time All-American at Ohio State, went 11th overall in this year’s draft. McBride turned to him after the play and shouted, “You’re a first-round pick? You’re a first rounder? For what?” Fox Sports posted the exchange during the game under the caption “Trey McBride with a message to Caleb Downs.”

One fan wrote, “Lmaooooo this is so disrespectful.”

Two others focused on Downs being a rookie. “This is a welcome to the league moment,” another fan wrote.

“Welcome to the big leagues kid lmao,” another fan added.

Another fan went after more than one play: “Caleb Downs been getting fried since he got in the league.”

Through Week 8, Downs has 29 solo tackles, a sack, two quarterback hits, a pass defended and two forced fumbles, and Pro Football Network’s NFL S Impact Grade has him at 70.7 for the season, 60th of 89 graded safeties.

Downs left the game early with a concussion.

McBride’s Late Touchdown and Overtime Catch Helped the Arizona Cardinals Rally

Arizona outgained Dallas 467-261. McBride had seven catches for 72 yards on eight targets, and none went longer than the 15-yarder against Downs.

His 14-yard touchdown from Gardner Minshew pulled the Cardinals within 27-24 with 2:11 left in regulation. PFN’s NFL TE Impact Grade has him at 88.1 through Week 8, the top-ranked tight end of 41 graded.

Brandon Aubrey’s 41-yard field goal stretched the Dallas lead to 30-24 with 1:09 left. Arizona answered with an 80-yard drive in 63 seconds, and Michael Wilson’s 13-yard touchdown catch tied it with 6 seconds remaining before Ryland’s extra point went wide left.

McBride’s seventh and final catch then opened the overtime drive that Ryland finished with a 42-yard field goal, Arizona’s first lead of the afternoon.

“I don’t think anyone really in this room or anyone, probably in the country, thought that we had a chance at a comeback right there,” Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said. “And so to make it 30-30, it was only fitting, and for Chad to finish it out for us.”

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said, “What I told the guys is we obviously have to learn to finish in all three phases. We had a chance to do it in a lot of different ways. When you have people down, you have to finish them, and that’s the most disappointing thing.”

The loss dropped Dallas to 3-5. Dak Prescott, who threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, said, “One of the toughest I guess I’ve been a part of. No other words for it really, other than really, really disappointing, frustrating. It’s part of this league.”

McBride’s seven catches made it 10 straight games with at least seven, the third-longest such streak in league history.
