From Mitch Trubisky to Aaron Rodgers, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in between, acquiring veteran quarterbacks has been the name of the game for the Pittsburgh Steelers. A change is coming, however, as the team is apparently abandoning the QB carousel in 2027, with insider Gerry Dulac reporting a new direction for the team's QB room next season.
According to Gerry Dulac, the Steelers will no longer be interested in the "veteran QB merry-go-round" that has been a staple of the team's philosophy since Big Ben hung up his cleats.
"That's not happening," Dulac wrote about the Steelers pursuing an experienced QB in 2027. "They are done playing that veteran QB merry-go-round."
The Steelers enjoyed outstanding quarterback continuity from the legendary Ben Roethlisberger for 18 years. But when the veteran signal-caller decided to retire following the 2021 season, the team's succession plan was completely exposed.
Signing Trubisky and drafting Kenny Pickett in the first round in 2022 failed to pan out. Oh, and the Russell Wilson acquisition and Justin Fields trade in the 2024 offseason also failed to move the needle.
Luckily for Pittsburgh, the Rodgers signing may have been the best QB move that the team has made over the past several years. But with Rodgers set to retire following the 2026 season, the team will apparently try their hand with one of their young signal-callers in Will Howard or Drew Allar rather than attempting to fill the void with another veteran placeholder.
