Our FA Cup 1st round opponents are now known.
On Monday evening, the draw for the first round of the greatest domestic cup competition was made – history-could-be-repeated
However, it was not clear-cut as to who the Hatters would play with our ball, number 24, being drawn out early and paired with either Chesham United or Forest Green Rovers.
The only certainty being that the tie would be played at Kenilworth Road.
Well, on Tuesday evening, our opponents were confirmed with Forest Green Rovers brushing aside Chesham United, 5-0, with all five goals being scored by different players.
On getting through to what is quaintly known as the 1st round proper and getting a plum tie, the Forest Green Rovers manager, Johnathan Gould, is quoted as having remarked when it comes to beating the Hatters:
“Yeah, of course. That’s what we’ve got to set the boys up to do, but there’s a lot to go on before that.”
By some strange quirk of fate, especially with so many teams in the draw, the Hatters find themselves with the very same team they drew in the 1st round last season, I wonder what the odds were on that happening?
On that occasion, the Hatters, in 7-goal thriller, emerged 4-3 victors, with the Luton Town goals coming from – Lamine Fanne, Nakhi Wells (2) and Gideon Kodua.
The game played on 31st-October and came very early after Jack Wilshere had been appointed as our new gaffer, replacing the axed Matt Bloomfield.
The attendance that day was announced as being just 4511 with 462 Forest Green supporters enjoying a day out in leafy Bedfordshire.
I would imagine that the crowd for the re-match, this season may very well be remarkably similar, proving that the FA Cup only really catches the attention of the public when the top-teams enter at the third-round stage.
At the of writing, the date and kick-off time have yet to be confirmed.
