'Bit of quality' - Sheffield Wednesday player ratings from draw against Cambridge United

Our marks out of 10...

Managerless Sheffield Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw by Cambridge United at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

The visitors had the better chances in the first 45 but The Owls improved at the midway point but couldn’t make the breakthrough.

But they did five minutes after the break when a quick free-kick from Callum Slattery sent Mason Burstow through on goal and he smashed in via the post.

Burstow was denied a second from six-yards out by a stunning save from Jake Eastwood and Cambridge made them pay when Sullay Kaikai drilled in to finish off a counter-attack.

Barry Bannan hit the post with a curling strike as Wednesday tried to get back in front but they had goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer to thank for earning them a point with some smart saves in each half, including two late on in a mad scramble.

The draw keeps Wednesday outside the play-offs after 12 games as the search for a new manager goes on following the sacking of Henrik Pedersen at the weekend.

Here are our player ratings from the game...

Spread himself big to make an impressive close-range block from Bennett. Stayed alert to tip a header from Lavery over and made an important one-on-one save in the last 15 before two more great blocks in a mad scramble. Not much chance with the well-taken equaliser. His saves in each half got The Owls a result.

His first league start of the season. Thundered into headers and tackles early doors before one loose pass almost proved costly. Could have moved the ball quicker at times in the first 45. Deserves credit for stepping in out of the cold. Hobbled off late on.

Recalled to the side as one of five change from Saturday. Got forward often and provided several inviting crosses. A decent outlet for Wednesday.

Did okay in the ugly stuff but struggled to dictate on the ball. Hit the post with a curling effort as the hosts pushed to get back in front. Legs rested with 10 to go.

Grafted but the partnership with Bannan still needs work. Got beaten too easily for Cambridge's equaliser.

Back in the side and played on the right. Went close on the half-hour mark but his stretched finish went just over. Got into another couple of promising attacking positions but couldn't make the most of them.

Back from suspension. Had a couple of shots from distance - one parried - and one wide before lashing a chance over from a tight angle just before the break. Looked threatening in the pocket but didn't see enough of the ball. Assisted the opener with a bit of quality from a quick free-kick.

Played wide left but didn't threaten. Had to go searching for the ball. Fired narrowly wide from the edge of the box after the opener. More involved in second 45.

Got the nod instead of Al-Hamadi. Needed to be stronger in holding it up in the first-half. Had a big chance early after the break with an instinctive close-range flick but it was saved. But moments later he lashed in via the post after running through on goal. Denied a second after a stunning save from Eastwood.
