The former midfielder with impressive managerial promotion record began with a thrilling comeback in draw at Cardiff

Three days in and Scott Parker has already lost his voice. West Ham’s head coach arrived on Tuesday, watched his side fight back from 3-0 down to draw with Cardiff on Wednesday and was struggling to make himself heard when he met the media on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s like in the summer holidays,” Parker said. “You put the flip-flops on for five weeks, then you come back home and you get your shoes on. You’re in a minute, you’ve got a blister on the back of your heel. It’s the same with a throat. I’ve not shouted for a little while. All of a sudden there’s shouting and it’s a bit croaky.”

Parker is back in the thick of it. Out of work after leaving Burnley in the wake of relegation from the Premier League last April, he cut short his break from management when West Ham parted company with Nuno Espírito Santo. Nuno was sacked early on Tuesday and replaced by Parker, who is intent on leading West Ham out of the Championship at the first time of asking.

It will not be easy. West Ham occupy the final playoff spot after three games without a win and displayed their inconsistencies against Cardiff. They made another slow start, conceding three during the first half, but roared back after a triple half-time change from Parker. Jarrod Bowen was inspired. But Parker needs complete performances if West Ham are to win automatic promotion.

“The Championship’s a tough league,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what name you have on a bit of paper. You have to have a level of humility of what this league needs. That’s a challenge when you come out of the Premier League.”

Parker argued that talent was not enough. Burnley were stingy when they won promotion. Parker has to sort out West Ham’s defence. “Of course we want to play a certain brand,” the 46-year-old said. “But I think it’s just a non-negotiable in terms of a committed team.”

Connections need to be rebuilt with disillusioned supporters. Parker was an all-action midfielder who loved his four years at West Ham as a player. He has added Mark Noble to his backroom staff. Noble has held the role of West Ham’s sporting director since retiring in 2022 but Parker confirmed the former club captain would have a role as an assistant coach. “He’s going to be coaching with me and be that sounding board,” Parker said.

Noble will be able to get Parker up to speed on his squad. West Ham need improvement at the back, better balance in midfield and more bite up front. Nils Koppen, the director of recruitment, could be busy in January. Parker wants to give everyone a clean slate, though. Soungoutou Magassa and Edson Álvarez will have opportunities. Even Maxwel Cornet travelled with the squad to Cardiff.

Parker did not focus during negotiations with Karim Virani, West Ham’s interim CEO, and Daniel Kretinsky, the club’s largest shareholder, on whether funds would be available for signings. One step at a time.

West Ham are in transition. David Sullivan still owns a 40% stake but is no longer on the board. Kretinsky’s power has grown, although the Czech billionaire is yet to say much in public. Parker has heard more from Kretinsky than most people.

“I found a man that was hugely passionate,” Parker said. “I instantly felt that, along with Karim, along with Nils. These were three people who know where they want the club to go.”

The target is a return to the top flight. Parker has won promotion with Bournemouth, Burnley and Fulham but his record at keeping teams up is less impressive. He has been dismissed a little unfairly as nothing more than a promotion specialist.

“In a short space of a coaching career I’ve had some huge success,” Parker said. “I’ve had some blips in terms of two full seasons in the Premier League. All I know is that I’m fully committed.”

That mindset convinced Kretinsky, Virani and Koppen to pick Parker. They wanted his knowledge of the club and record at this level.

West Ham are eighth before visiting Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. They are taking 7,000 fans to Ewood Park and Parker knows there can be no more complacency.
