Newmarket Town score stoppage-time goals against Tilbury and Hardwick to extend unbeaten run in all competitions to 15 games

This Newmarket Town side seemingly does not know when it is beaten.

The Jockeys headed into last weekend’s home Isthmian League North Division encounter with Tilbury unbeaten in their last 13 games in all competitions.

Michael Shinn’s men had won 12 of those games, but when Soumen Nandi fired in from distance on the hour to put visiting Tilbury 3-0 up at the NYO Stadium, it looked like the game was up.

However, a 68th-minute Elliott Reeves penalty gave Newmarket some hope, and that intensified just five minutes later when Lennon King reduced the deficit to just a goal.

Nevertheless, it still appeared that Newmarket’s efforts were going to be in vain until stoppage time when Reeves struck the equaliser.

Boss said Shinn: “When you see their third goal, where their lad has travelled half the pitch and then smashed into the top corner, you do start to think that it’s getting away from us.

“But we made a couple of changes, looked to get on the front foot, and as soon as we got the first goal, it felt like something could happen.

“We also had a couple of goals disallowed, so we really pushed in that last half an hour or so.

“Thankfully, the changes made a difference. The reaction from the players towards the end was brilliant.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Newmarket’s sequence extended to 15 without defeat as they defeated lower-level Hardwick 3-1 in the quarter-finals of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup.

A much-changed Newmarket team certainly did not have it their own way against their Cambridgeshire County League Premier Division opponents.

Josh Lee broke the deadlock after an hour, only for Hardwick to level up the scoreline 15 minutes later.

A penalty shootout loomed at that point, but two stoppage-time goals from Lee to complete his hat-trick secured the home side a place in the semi-finals.

“We rested a few and got some minutes into players that needed them,” added Shinn.

“We could have scored more, and their goalkeeper was probably man of the match, but fair play to them.

“I had a couple of young lads on the bench that I wanted to give a run out for half an hour, but the game panned out differently to how we wanted. We couldn’t do it, and that’s credit to Hardwick.

“The main thing is we’re in the semi-final. We’ve lost in the semis of the competition quite a few times over the years and played terribly, so we’re keen to at least reach the final this time.”

Soham Town Rangers are also through to the last four following their 4-2 win over March Town United on Tuesday night. Ben Tofts (2), Kieran Twinn and Hayden Lambert were all on target for the Greens, who were beaten 1-0 by Cambridge City during last season’s final.

Ely City, meanwhile, bowed out after being thrashed 5-0 by Histon.

The remaining quarter-final between holders Cambridge City and Great Shelford will be played on November 10.
