Former Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has offered a bleak outlook on George Russell's future chances of competing for an F1 world title. The former head of Red Bull's junior programme has questioned the Mercedes driver's place within the team after Kimi Antonelli's remarkable rise in 2026.
Coming into the 2026 season, many had tipped Russell as the favourite for the Drivers' title, but in only his second season in F1, Antonelli is now on the brink of becoming the youngest-ever champion and has a chance, albeit slim, of being crowned this weekend in Austin.
With a 102-point advantage on his teammate, should Antonelli win at the Circuit of the Americas, while Russell finishes P9 or lower, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton P5 or lower, the Italian will be champion at just 20 years of age. While Russell has experienced a fair share of bad luck this season, former Red Bull man Marko believes the Briton may have just had his best-ever chance at becoming champion.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Marko boldly claimed that while Russell is still a top driver in F1, Antonelli has "quite clearly" taken his spot as Mercedes' No. 1 driver, a status Marko believes Russell is unlikely to ever attain anywhere else in F1.
Reflecting on the 28-year-old's season, Marko said: “Mentally, it’s certainly a massive setback and it’s a blow. Russell is no longer the number one driver."
"Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him. But Russell is one of the top drivers. I doubt whether he’ll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere.”

Focusing on Antonelli, Marko highlighted the Italian's improvement from what was a tricky rookie season in 2025, praising a newfound maturity this season, as well as "incredible speed and superb car control."
