Celtic team news: Høgh starts as Johnston returns to strong squad

Celtic team news brings an attacking change at Easter Road, with Kasper Høgh starting against Hibernian and Alistair Johnston back in the matchday squad.

Martin O’Neill has named Høgh alongside Camilo Durán and Callum Osmand for the noon kick-off. Meanwhile, Johnston takes his place on a strong bench that also includes Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota.

There is plenty to catch the eye in that selection. Celtic have attacking options from the start and experienced players available if O’Neill needs to change the game.

Høgh starts as Osmand keeps his place

Compared with Celtic’s starting XI against Celta Vigo on Thursday, Høgh replaces Haissem Hassan. The other ten starters retain their places.

That means another start for Osmand, with Durán also included as O’Neill looks for a productive afternoon from his attacking players.

However, the team announcement alone does not confirm exactly how that combination will line up. The important point is that all three are selected to start.

Sam Johnstone keeps the gloves, with Viljami Sinisalo providing cover among the substitutes.

Johnston returns to a strong Celtic bench

Johnston’s return to the squad is a welcome sight. His inclusion gives O’Neill another established option alongside Carter-Vickers, while Jota offers an attacking alternative.

Add Hassan, Oliver Sørensen, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Forrest, and there is considerable experience available. Shumaira Mheuka is also among the substitutes.

For me, that is a very strong bench. There are options to freshen up the attack, adjust the midfield or reinforce the defence as the afternoon develops.

Being named among the substitutes does not guarantee anyone will play. Nevertheless, having those choices available gives the manager flexibility.

McGregor leads a familiar core

Colby Donovan, Dane Murray, Liam Scales and Kieran Tierney retain their starting places, while Callum McGregor leads the side.

Mika Baur and Benjamin Nygren also start as O’Neill keeps faith with the core of Thursday’s team.

Now Celtic need to turn that continuity, attacking selection and strength in reserve into a convincing performance.

Celtic starting XI and substitutes

Celtic: Johnstone, Donovan, Murray, Scales, Tierney, McGregor, Baur, Nygren, Durán, Høgh, Osmand.

Substitutes: Sinisalo, Johnston, Jota, Sørensen, Carter-Vickers, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Hassan, Mheuka, Forrest.
