Andoni Iraola gives honest verdict on Ryan Gravenberch’s form as Dominik Szoboszlai nears return

Andoni Iraola has a decision to make with his midfield selection as Liverpool face Arsenal this Sunday, with Trey Nyoni pushing hard for a start.

Nyoni outshone Ryan Gravenberch during Wednesday’s win over Chelsea, and as the Dutchman struggles to find consistent form, there is an argument that the teenager should go again as the champions come to town.

Gravenberch gave away a needless penalty against Chelsea before missing his own spot-kick during the shootout. But when asked about his struggles during his pre-Arsenal press conference, Iraola confirmed that while Gravenberch has had some good games and some bad games recently, the 24-year-old retains his trust.

Iraola continues to trust Gravenberch

Gravenberch has been on something of a downward spiral ever since the start of last season. Unable to capture his brilliant form from 2024/25, the Netherlands international is in danger of permanently losing his place in the Liverpool XI.

Despite the lingering threat of being dropped, though, Iraola has claimed that he and his staff are happy enough with Gravenberch as they prepare for the biggest test of the season so far.

“I think as you said, he’s had better games this season, worse games,” said the Liverpool head coach.

“Lately he’s playing a lot, a lot of minutes and has also played very good games recently. We trust him, we know what he can produce. Like with other players when they don’t play well we try to help him improve the things I think he can improve and when he’s in a good place try to keep him there.”

“I think they have a chance, they have a chance,” he said.

“But I don’t know for sure if they will be involved or not, but we still have two days, so there is a chance, yes.”

Liverpool will likely want to be careful with Szoboszlai after rushing him back into the starting XI too early against Brentford. And though fans should expect to see the Hungarian return soon, it sounds like Gravenberch will be trusted to correct his form with another start at Anfield.
