Esteban Ocon has been handed a potential Formula 1 lifeline, with his next most ‘likely’ role revealed.
Ocon, 30, has been racing in F1 since making his debut with Manor Racing in 2016; the Frenchman went on to represent Force India, Renault/Alpine, and Haas.
So far in his career, Ocon has started 198 races, claiming four podium finishes and a total of 490 World Championship points. In 2021, the 30-year-old scored his maiden F1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz.
Despite being one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, Ocon is set to be without a seat for 2027, having been dropped by Haas, who opted for Ferrari academy star Rafael Camara.
This weekend, Ocon was suddenly dropped by Haas for the Mexican Grand Prix, with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa taking over from the Frenchman.
Looking ahead, Ocon has previously been linked with Cadillac, who are yet to make a decision on who will partner Sergio Perez in 2027.
However, according to a recent report by Autosport, Ocon’s most ‘likely’ job for 2027 has been revealed.
It has been claimed that Ocon is expected to be Aston Martin’s reserve driver in 2027, behind lead drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Autosport stated: “The 30-year-old Frenchman is likely to become Aston Martin’s reserve in 2027, Autosport understands, after a disappointing time since joining Haas in 2025 – comfortably being beaten by Bearman.”
In 2026, Jak Crawford has been the reserve driver for Aston Martin, having driven in Free Practice One this week in Mexico. In addition to Crawford, ex-McLaren star Stoffel Vandoorne is also a reserve and sim driver for the Silverstone-based team.
During Friday’s practice session, Ocon had a public disagreement with his team via the team radio, with the Frenchman unhappy with the tyre choice.
On Saturday, ahead of FP3, it was confirmed that Hirakawa would replace Ocon, with the team refusing to make any further statements.
Speaking live on Sky Sports, Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu said: “Yeah, I can’t tell you much, but at least I can tell you that he’s not ill. That much I can tell you.
“No, honestly, I’m sorry, but I can’t go into any details. Honestly, [the] only thing I can say is we just focused on what’s right in front of us, trying to get Ryo in the best shape for quali this afternoon.”
