Defenders dreaded coming up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of his unpredictability, huge frame and ability to find the back of the net from pretty much anywhere on the pitch.

The Swede spent years traveling around Europe to destroy defences, and he spent most of his career in Italy, a league renowned for its defensive style. He relished battling the best warrior-esque centre-backs in Serie A during his era, whether that be for AC Milan, Juventus or Inter Milan.

Ibrahimovic even landed in the Premier League with Manchester United and showed just why he's regarded as one of the best target men in football history. While most of his opponents couldn't handle his power and dominance, he admitted that one did manage to ruffle his feathers and outsmart him physically and mentally.

Ibrahimovic not only went to war with defenders in duels on the ground and in the air but also played mind games with his rivals. It took a big personality to be able to deal with him and Italian football has birthed many gritty and determined centre-backs.

None more so than Giorgio Chiellini, who made life difficult for attackers with his persistence and never-say-die attitude. He made an impression on Ibrahimovic whenever they clashed as he explained back in 2016 (via The Score):

"For me Giorgio Chiellini is the toughest, and the roughest, marker that I have ever faced."

Being marked by Chiellini came as a nuisance not only to Ibrahimovic but many other forwards during the Italian's legendary career. With a six-foot-two inch frame, he combined old-school fashioned defending with physicality to boss the opposition.

Ibrahimovic added: "He is the one that I suffer against the most. It’s truly difficult to play against him, he does not give you space, he does not let you breathe."

When the Swede returned to Turin with Inter to face Juve, he ended up battered and bruised thanks to Chiellini. In his autobiography he recalled this while making an accusation: "He tried to provoke me, and then he tackled me from behind. That’s a cowardly thing to do. You don’t see the guy coming, and I went down in pain. I was in a lot of pain."

Chiellini spent the majority of his career at Juventus, winning nine Serie A titles among many other honours. He also enjoyed success with Italy's national team including winning Euro 2020 when he scored a vital equaliser in a final win over England at Wembley.

The 42-year-old retired in January 2024 while at MLS club Los Angeles FC and did so having cemented his legacy as one of the best Italian defenders of all-time. And he also is only one of a few who made life difficult for Ibrahimovic on the pitch.

Another former Serie A marksman who, like Ibrahimovic, didn't enjoy facing Chiellini is Edinson Cavani, who encountered the Juve legend while at Napoli. The Uruguayan became one of the most prolific forwards in the modern era of Italian football.

Cavani opined while at Manchester United in September 2021: "The most difficult defender I’ve come up against was Giorgio Chiellini. We’ve played against each other in many games, and we’ve competed against each other all over the pitch, so yes I can tell you that Giorgio Chiellini has been the toughest defender I’ve had to face."

That's two of the very best strikers to grace Serie A who both acknowledge Chiellini as their toughest opponent. Had he moved away from Italy to another top European league such as the Premier League, it would have been interesting to see how he fared.
