‘Chiefs Are Being Really Aggressive’ — Insider Links Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City With Trade Deadline Swoop For ‘Top Prize’ WR

The Kansas City Chiefs have rarely lacked reasons to trust Patrick Mahomes, but even a quarterback of his caliber needs receivers who can make the most of his throws. Kansas City now faces a deadline decision about whether to keep working with the group or bring in reinforcements before the trade deadline.

With several contenders searching for help at receiver, one name has started to stand out in the Chiefs’ plans.

Chiefs Target Josh Downs in Trade Deadline WR Search

NFL insider Charles Robinson identified Josh Downs as the leading target in a crowded receiver market, with Kansas City reportedly making an “aggressive” approach to land the wantaway Indianapolis Colts receiver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers are also pursuing additional receiving help, making Downs a sought-after option among contenders.

In his recent column for “NFL Rulebook with Charles Robinson,” Robinson wrote, “On the wide receiver front, multiple teams are vying for Josh Downs. It seems like the Kansas City Chiefs are really being aggressive. The Chiefs, 49ers and Steelers all seem pretty intent on adding another wide receiver. Downs is the top prize.”

Downs, 25, requested a trade from Indianapolis earlier this month, and reports indicate the Colts are listening to offers as they navigate a 2-6 season and a broader roster reset. Kansas City could give the receiver a new opportunity while adding another option for Mahomes.

The North Carolina product joined Indianapolis as a third-round pick in 2023. Through eight games this season, he has caught 30 passes for 330 yards and one touchdown, ranking 34th in PFN NFL WR Impact Score. His route-running and ability to create plays from the slot make him an appealing target for teams seeking help in the passing game.

The asking price remains a key part of the negotiations. Indianapolis has reportedly received an offer worth a fourth-round pick, but the Colts would prefer a third-round selection. A fourth-round pick with performance-based conditions could help close the gap between the two sides.

Kansas City also possesses the necessary financial flexibility to absorb Downs’ remaining prorated salary. Because the 2026 NFL season has passed its midway point, a trade partner would need to take on approximately $1.96 million. The Chiefs’ active available cap space hovers closer to $1.4 million, and the minor gap can easily be bridged by executing a simple contract restructure.

The deadline is set for Tuesday, Nov. 10, with a decision expected after Week 9 games conclude. Downs is also expected to face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9, potentially lining up against his younger brother, Cowboys safety Caleb Downs.

Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets and Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars have also been linked to Kansas City. However, their teams are reportedly reluctant to move them.
