Vincent Kompany, the head coach of professional German football club Bayern Munich, has been hospitalized.

Kompany, 40, collapsed while he was watching a reserve team training session on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Säbener Straße in Munich, according to a statement from the team.

“The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session. Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice,” the statement said.

Kompany, who Eberl referred to as “Vinnie” in the statement, is “receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.”

Eberl said Kompany’s coaching team, “in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties,” and concluded the statement with: “All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

According to The Associated Press, Kompany was recently dealing with a viral infection that kept him out of a training session and press conference on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The outlet reported that he was in the dugout the following day as Arsenal took Bayern to a 2-2 draw in the Champions League.
