‘I could have taken eight players off at half-time’ – Franck Haise laments Rennes’ performance in 5-2 away loss to Nice

Franck Haise’s homecoming to former club OGC Nice didn’t go as planned as his Rennes side has been comprehensively beaten by Olivier Pantaloni’s Aiglons. OGC Nice centre-forward Elye Wahi logged a hat-trick. Jonathan Clauss and Mohamed Amoura also found the back of the net for the hosts. Although France international goalkeeper Brice Samba missed out due to an injury, this is not the first time this season that Rennes’ defense has been this exposed away from home in Ligue 1. They notably shipped four goals at both Lyon and Paris FC.

“We’ve conceded 13 goals in our last three away matches, changing our system, sometimes even changing players… But not changing our discipline or our attitude in certain duels“, lamented Haise, who pointed at his side’s lack of cohesion when out of possesion. The Rennes manager also rued his side’s defensive mistakes. On Friday, they conceded two penalties in the first half alone, both dispatched by Wahi. They trail 3-1 at half-time.

“At half-time, I took off two players – Przemysław Frankowski and Adrien Thomasson – but I could have taken off eight. Who was really on form in the first half? Hardly anyone.” Rennes host Olympiacos on Wednesday for Matchday 4 of the UEFA Europa League.
