Star cricketer Mitchell Santner has become the most-capped T20I cricketer in New Zealand's history, reaching 143 appearances during the fifth T20I of India's tour of New Zealand in 2026. The all-rounder and New Zealand T20I captain moved past Ish Sodhi, who had held the record with 142 appearances, to stand alone at the top of his country's all-time list in the shortest format.
The milestone arrived during a series that had already produced a significant personal landmark for Santner. In the fourth T20I against India in Auckland, he became the third New Zealand bowler to claim 150 wickets in T20I cricket, a feat that further underlined his standing as one of the most influential figures in his country's white-ball setup.
Santner's previous T20I appearance before this series had come on October 22 2026, also against India, making the ongoing tour a particularly significant stretch of cricket for the 34-year-old captain.
With 143 caps, Santner now leads New Zealand's all-time T20I appearance list by one over Sodhi, who sits second on 142. Behind them, Tim Southee occupies third place with 126 T20I appearances for the Black Caps.
Former opener Martin Guptill follows in fourth position with 122 T20I caps, while Daryl Mitchell rounds out the top five with 109 appearances. The list reflects the depth of experience New Zealand have accumulated across conditions over the past decade, with Santner now the clear leader among that distinguished group.
Each of those four players set a high bar in their own right. Santner has now moved beyond all of them in the appearances column, a measure of the consistency and longevity he has brought to New Zealand's T20I side across several years of international cricket.
Santner's path to 143 T20I caps reflects years of consistent selection across home and away conditions. His value as a left-arm spinner who can also contribute with the bat has kept him central to the BlackCaps' white-ball plans, and his appointment as T20I captain further cemented his importance to the team's structure.
