The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 on Sunday without completing a single pass, something no NFL team had done in more than five decades (since the 1974 Buffalo Bills).
Baker Mayfield went 0-for-3 in the pouring rain at Raymond James Stadium, but Tampa Bay still managed to win thanks to a franchise-record 324 rushing yards and four interceptions of Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr.
The Week 8 win was Tampa Bay’s second straight after last week’s dominant victory over the Carolina Panthers. The win pulled the Bucs even with the Falcons at 3-5 and left them a half-game behind the Panthers (3-4) in the NFC South.
Mayfield handed the ball off 52 times. Bucky Irving ran for 170 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 27 carries, Kenny Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 carries, and the day marked career single-game highs for both backs. They’re just the second pair in Bucs’ franchise history to top 100 rushing yards in the same game after Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn on Nov. 1, 1998.
That kept a trend going from the week before. In the Bucs’ 43-13 win at Carolina, they rushed for 258 yards while Mayfield completed just 7 of 11 passes for 64 yards. While Tampa Bay’s back-to-back wins are impressive, is this team for real? Pro Football Network asked our NFL analysts to weigh in on the Bucs’ outlook and playoff hopes.
“What we do know is that the middle of the NFL is murky right now. The Buccaneers are No. 10 in PFN’s metric-based power rankings and while it feels high, when you look at the teams below them (the Broncos, Patriots, Lions, Packers, Rams, Falcons, Panthers, Giants, and Browns), none of them have been convincing this year. Tampa Bay’s losses are against PFN’s No. 2 team, No. 6 team, No. 8 team, No. 14 team, and No. 19 team, and they have not lost by more than 7 points.
“Mayfield did not become a terrible player over one offseason, so when they need him, there will be moments he steps up. There will also be moments when he costs them games, but this team has a realistic path to 9 or even 10 wins and hosting a playoff game. The Buccaneers are now over 55% to win the division in our NFL Playoff Meter simulations, but whether they can win a Wild Card game, that is to be seen.”
“With that said, that isn’t saying much. This is a dreadful division and the moment you think a team in the NFC South is good, they tend to fall on their face. There are still some real concerns about this team; they managed to win without Baker Mayfield doing anything against Atlanta, but this group needs him to step up in order to realize their full potential.”
