After roundly booing him upon his exit from the club in 2025, Liverpool supporters have not been impressed by their post-Trent Alexander-Arnold reality.
In fairness, a serious injury to Conor Bradley has prevented it from ever really getting off the ground, but after they failed to create anything much of note against Arsenal on Sunday, it is clear that Alexander-Arnold continues to be a big, big miss.
In the meantime, the Scouser is having to make do with a squad role at Real Madrid. Though he started Los Blancos’ win over Racing Santander on Sunday, Alexander-Arnold had played only one minute of their previous four matches. Inevitably, rumours of a potential return to Liverpool have begun doing the rounds, but according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, this is not going to happen.

Liverpool have a LOT of attacking options and someone has to miss out đź‘€ What front three would you select?
Alexander-Arnold’s much-criticised move to Real Madrid last summer has yet to work out for anyone. The player himself is having a miserable time, Real have not benefitted much from having him around and Liverpool are definitely worse off.
Nevertheless, Romano took to his YouTube channel just after Liverpool’s defeat against Arsenal to confirm that despite the rumours, there is nothing at all to suggest that the Reds will move for Alexander-Arnold and, even if they do, the 28-year-old is not planning to leave Madrid in January.
“Let me clarify. Links between Trent and Liverpool for a potential comeback are completely out of the mark,” he said.
“Liverpool never started any kind of concrete or serious conversation to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold back to the club. First point. Second point in general about Alexander-Arnold returning to the Premier League or leaving Real Madrid in any case, that’s not something that Trent is planning for the January transfer window, or Real Madrid.”
“At the moment Trent and Real Madrid plan to continue together at least until the end of the season and, in reality, the feeling from both sides is that they want to continue together for the long-term. When Trent decided to leave Liverpool and come to Real Madrid it was a big decision, we know how much consequence it had in terms of impact in England. But Trent is convinced about Real Madrid and Real Madrid are convinced about Trent.
“It’s going to take some time, last season was not so lucky. This season obviously Fede [Valverde] is doing very well, but Trent played today against Racing Santander and did very well.”
Although Liverpool fans may not completely give up on the idea of a return for Alexander-Arnold if he continues to struggle for game time, it seems fairly certain that a comeback in the New Year can be written off.
