Ipswich Town had to be content with a point as Julio Enciso scored a stunning second-half goal to earn a 2-2 draw against Hull City.
Ipswich looked to have secured all three points after a dominant first half, with Florentino Luis scoring a deserved opener. However, the Tigers fought back in the second half and Enciso’s moment of brilliance meant Gary O’Neil’s side had to settle for a point. Here are the key talking points from a thrilling afternoon in East Yorkshire.
Florentino Luis has become a key figure in the Ipswich midfield, and he got his first goal of the season. Luis put in another great performance with a powerful finish to Abdoul Ouattara’s cross to put the visitors ahead.
A goal that Ipswich thoroughly deserved after dominating possession and territory.
Another great performance from Florentino with Sasa Lukic still not available. He opened the scoring and brought calmness and energy to the midfield.
Whilst Hull should be praised for their reaction in the second half, Ipswich will be upset with a few key decisions.
Firstly, Dara O’Shea seemed to be fouled in the box from a corner. Many expected a penalty to be awarded but the referee and VAR didn’t see enough.
Later on, Julio Enciso headed in what looked to be Ipswich’s second goal. However, referee Tom Kirk immediately blew his whistle and after watching replays it wasn’t clear what had happened. They were also robbed of another great chance as Emersonn looked to be fouled inside the box early on in the second half.
Whilst they did pick up a point, Gary O’Neil’s side will feel they had plenty of chances to make the game safe.
Ipswich were looking like they were going to lose, but Enciso stepped up. Despite some rough treatment from the Hull defenders, the Paraguayan international had been a constant threat and scored a goal that could have won them the game.
He received the ball from Azor Matusiwa and shrugged off one challenge before dancing past another defender to fire in a brilliant finish into the top corner.
It brought back memories of some of his wonder goals from previous spells at the club and shows just how much work Ipswich have put in to bring him back. He gave the Blues some inspiration.
The main thing that stood out from today was Ipswich’s attitude.
Whilst they will be disappointed they could only score one goal from their dominant first half, they would have been even more disappointed if Hull had turned the game around. However, this team never looked like they were going to lose.
Despite being behind, Ipswich kept pushing and were rewarded with a stunning equaliser. They finished the game as the better team. This has become a key attribute of the team under O’Neil. Whilst they may not always play their best football, they always show they can fight back from a tough situation.
It feels like we have lost a couple of points, but Ipswich played really well in spells and could have been out of sight. However, the overall picture is positive. They have shown they can compete with anyone in the division and have shown they can fight back from behind. This never-say-die attitude is becoming a key attribute to the team. The Club often talk about running towards adversity, and this is exactly what Enciso did to score his equaliser. We now have Bournemouth to play, and there is every reason to believe Ipswich will keep building on a promising start to their campaign.
