Rangers return to domestic action on Saturday (24 October) looking to reignite their title momentum, but statistical analysis suggests Derek McInnes faces a high-stakes tactical test at Ibrox.
The Light Blues host St Johnstone on Saturday afternoon in their 10th Scottish Premiership game of the season. Second-placed Rangers currently sit four points behind leaders Celtic with 20 points from nine games, while St Johnstone occupy fifth position with 12 points.
Following recent dropped points against Dundee at Dens Park, the pressure on McInnes to secure all three points has intensified as the Gers aim to keep pace at the summit.
On paper, history heavily favours the home side. Rangers have won each of their last nine consecutive encounters against St Johnstone across all competitions, stretching back to a 2-1 defeat in November 2022.
Meanwhile, St Johnstone arrive in Glasgow on the back of a 1-1 draw against Dundee United in their previous outing, where Rangers loanee Lyall Cameron netted the equaliser against them.
However, data processing platform Forebet, which utilises mathematical algorithms to simulate upcoming fixtures, has delivered an intriguing breakdown for Saturday’s clash. While the supercomputer’s primary scoreline prediction forecasts a 2-0 victory for Rangers, the underlying probability metrics present a far more uncomfortable picture for McInnes.
According to the mathematical engine’s breakdown, Rangers have been assigned a 47% probability of taking all three points on home soil. Crucially, when combining the alternative outcomes, the algorithm gives a 33% chance of a draw and a 20% chance of an away victory for St Johnstone.
This means that at 53%, the collective likelihood of Rangers dropping points at home is actually calculated as higher than their probability of winning the match outright.
For McInnes, these metrics arrive at a sensitive moment. Despite boasting a dominant head-to-head record over the Perthshire outfit, any further slip-up at Ibrox would severely disrupt domestic momentum.
While Rangers remain strong favourites to maintain their dominance over the Saints, the algorithm’s warning underlines that McInnes has zero margin for error when setting up his side this Saturday.
