Leeds United defender Jayden Bogle escaped a red card on Saturday because his tackle on Mathys Tel was deemed of low speed and accidental.
Bogle was the subject of a lengthy VAR review just past the half-hour mark of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Spurs. The wing-back looked to have made an innocuous challenge on Mathys Tel but left the winger writhing in pain.
Replays showed Bogle had accidentally stood on the Achilles of Tel in what looked a very painful tackle. VAR assistant Tony Harrington took a long look at the challenge while the Spurs man received treatment.
Bogle was eventually cleared of a red card, escaping any form of punishment for his challenge. Tel had to be eventually substituted after trying to play on.
After the incident, the Premier League Match Centre wrote on X: “The referee’s call of no red card to Bogle for the challenge on Tel was checked and confirmed by VAR.”
The post also detailed what was said by VAR assistant Harrington during the review. He said: “I'm confirming the on-field decision of no red card. There’s a lack of speed going into the challenge and he’s stepping into the tackle. Confirming a reckless challenge”.
