Toto Wolff is one of the most influential figures in Formula 1, having helped transform Mercedes into one of the most successful teams in the sport’s history. However, his achievements in the paddock are only part of his story. The Austrian executive is also a businessman and investor whose wealth extends well beyond his role as Mercedes team principal.
Wolff’s financial success has attracted considerable attention, with searches about his net worth, business career, Mercedes ownership, and personal life gaining traction. But is Toto Wolff actually a billionaire, and how did he make his money?
Yes, Toto Wolff is a billionaire. Forbes estimates his real-time net worth at $2.7 billion as of 2026. As of October, the publication ranks him No. 1,534 on its real-time tracker of the world’s wealthiest individuals and identifies sports as his source of wealth.
The 54-year-old Austrian’s fortune mainly comes from his investments and his ownership interest in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team. He is not simply a highly paid team executive; he is also a major figure in the business behind one of F1’s most valuable organizations.
Forbes lists Wolff as controlling 33% of Mercedes. However, the ownership structure became more complicated in November 2025, when CrowdStrike founder and CEO George Kurtz acquired a 15% minority interest in Wolff’s ownership entity, which holds one-third of the team. Mercedes-Benz and INEOS hold the other two-thirds in equal shares.
The transaction brought an outside investor into Wolff’s ownership group without changing Mercedes’ leadership or governance structure. Wolff continues to serve as team principal and CEO.
Wolff did not build his fortune exclusively through Formula 1. His business career began before he joined a team, with investments in technology companies, industrial businesses, and motorsports organizations.
After initially pursuing a career in banking, he founded his first investment company, Marchfifteen, in 1998. He later established Marchsixteen in 2004, expanding his investment activities beyond the technology sector.
One of his notable investments was in HWA AG, a company involved in Mercedes-Benz’s motorsports programs, including its DTM and Formula 3 operations. His business interests eventually brought him closer to F1.
In 2009, Wolff invested in Williams, joining its board of directors before becoming executive director in 2012. He was part of the organization when Pastor Maldonado secured its memorable Spanish Grand Prix victory that year.
Then came his biggest career move, joining Mercedes as managing partner and acquiring an ownership stake in the team. That decision would become a defining part of his financial success.
Wolff joined Mercedes in January 2013 as executive director and managing partner, taking responsibility for the team’s motorsports activities. He subsequently became its team principal and CEO.
His arrival coincided with a significant transformation in Mercedes’ Formula 1 operation. The team began its dominant championship run in 2014, winning eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships between 2014 and 2021.
Mercedes also secured seven consecutive Drivers’ Championships between 2014 and 2020, with Lewis Hamilton winning six and Nico Rosberg claiming one.
Wolff’s leadership has made him one of the most successful team principals in F1 history. He has also played a significant role in developing Mercedes’ driver lineup, including its partnerships with Hamilton, George Russell, and Kimi Antonelli.
Although he is now best known for managing Mercedes, Wolff once pursued a career as a racing driver.
Born in Vienna, Austria, he developed an interest in motorsports as a teenager. At 17, he began competing in Austrian Formula Ford, later participating in German Formula Ford as well.
One of his early achievements came in 1994, when he won his class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. He eventually stepped away from professional racing to focus on business.
However, Wolff returned to the track in 2002, competing in the FIA GT Championship. He secured a race victory and later achieved further success in endurance racing, including winning the 24 Hours of Bahrain.
His experience behind the wheel gave him a different perspective when he transitioned into motorsports management and investment.
Forbes lists Monaco as Wolff’s residence. The principality is home to several prominent figures from the F1 paddock, including current and former drivers.
His lifestyle also reflects the demands of running a Formula 1 team, with frequent international travel throughout the racing calendar. Wolff has been associated with a Bombardier Global 6500 private aircraft, which offers a more convenient way to travel between race destinations.
Away from the track, he has spoken about prioritizing time with his wife, Susie, and their children (Benedict, Rosa, and Jack). He has also discussed his interest in fitness and going to the gym.
Wolff’s lifestyle is not defined solely by his wealth. In interviews, he has emphasized the importance of family, personal happiness, and maintaining a balance between professional responsibilities and life outside Formula 1.
