How long every Premier League team in Europe has between games to recover
How long every Premier League team in Europe has between games to recover

Premier League fixture congestion is always a hot topic and Aston Villa have the shortest turnaround of the nine teams competing in European football this week.

Villa play Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League at Villa Park on Wednesday and Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday. There will be 64 hours and 30 minutes between the start of the matches, but the impact on rest time will be limited by both games being played at home.

Man City have an extra day's recovery time but the longest of all nine Premier League teams in Europe this week sees Liverpool play two matches 114 hours apart as a result of Brighton & Hove Albion's Europa League involvement.

These are the league phase fixtures in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League in the week commencing Monday 19 October and all kick-off times are listed in BST.

Which clubs have had the least rest in the 2026/27 season?

Excluding qualifying matches and Brighton – the Seagulls are in the Conference League, which has played a match less than the Champions League and Europa League – Bournemouth have had the lowest recovery time of the Premier League's European teams so far in 2026/27.

The Cherries have averaged 66 hours between their Europa League matches and the subsequent fixtures in the Premier League, giving them a running total of 198 hours or eight days and six hours.

Crystal Palace have the next lowest recovery time. Their total across matchdays one, two and three is 200 hours and 15 minutes. That's an average of 66 hours and 45 minutes between their European and domestic fixtures.

Palace and Bournemouth are the only teams to have had all three turnarounds under 72 hours. Sunderland, Brighton, Villa and Liverpool have dipped below 72 hours twice.

Thursday night football might suggest that Europa League contenders Sunderland should be next on the list, but the third-lowest number of recovery hours so far this season actually belongs to Villa. Unai Emery's team have averaged 75 hours and 45 minutes between their Champions League fixtures and the Premier League matches that have followed them.

Man Utd and Man City have had the most recovery time, with 274 hours and 45 minutes (United) and 272 hours (City).

How European fixtures affect Premier League scheduling

There are a multitude of factors that play their part in deciding when Premier League fixtures after European midweeks are scheduled.

UEFA, the Premier League, clubs, police and broadcasters Sky and TNT Sports all have an input.

Premier League teams have agreed that teams playing away Champions League matches on Wednesday would be exempt from the Saturday lunchtime broadcast slot regardless of TNT's match selection.

Although player unions around the world are aligned on the fact that 72 hours should be a minimum recovery time for players, the reality is somewhat different. According to the Premier League: "Competition organisers look traditionally to give clubs at least two clear days between matches."

Europa League teams can't play on Thursday and then Saturday, but pushing all matches to Sunday isn't possible when there are Champions League fixtures to be played on the following Tuesday.

Broadcast selections help to define which matches end up where in the schedule.

Sky Sports have the rights to the majority of the broadcast packages and can show selected 'weekend' fixtures on Friday evening, Saturday teatime, various slots on Sunday, and Monday evening.

TNT Sports owns the 12:30pm slot on Saturday, which has an impact when their selected matches feature teams involved in the Champions League. If the match cannot be played at 12:30pm on Saturday, it moves past the 3:00pm (broadcast blackout) and 5:30pm (Sky) match slots into the rarer 8:00pm Saturday kick-off time.

How much recovery time do footballers need between matches?

Squad management, rotation and prioritisation of some competitions over others means that the workload requirements and recovery time between European and Premier League matches cannot be applied evenly as a blanket rule for players.

The necessary recovery time between matches has been studied often over the years. Some research concludes that 48 to 72 hours can be a sound basis for physiological recovery, but some studies indicate that this isn't long enough to support injury prevention over time. FIFPRO, the players' union, has called for 120 hours between matches to maximise performance and minimise risk of injury.

Research into fixture congestion often frames the definition of 'congestion' as matches that are played within 96 hours of one another. The impact of fixture congestion on competition and performance has been explored, including the apparent consequence that players are taking it upon themselves to manage their workloads in-game during busy periods of the season.
