Sean Payton says Broncos remained confident in Bo Nix: ‘He's our guy’

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton never wavered in his quarterback, Bo Nix, even after a stretch of bad performances left fans and media questioning if he should have.

Following the Broncos' 30-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Payton elaborated on his trust and confidence in Nix amidst his struggles. Following Nix's 222-yard, two-total-touchdown performance, Payton said the building has backed the QB all season.

"The confidence inside the building, relative to his abilities, hadn't changed at all," Payton said . "I appreciate – sometimes you're answering questions about whether or not and there was not one time where we were [considering benching Nix]. He's our guy. It was good to see him play well. It was good to see us block well and make some plays down the field.”

Nix broke 200 passing yards for just the third time this season after facing difficult defenses from the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams in the first six games.

After a performance that helped snap Nix out of an especially rough two-game slump where he failed to break 125 passing yards, he was asked if the performance vindicated him. Nix answered like Payton would have: he was happy with his performance, but never satisfied.

"I felt that we played a good game offensively," Nix said. "Still several things that we would like to get better at. (There were) several penalties that we didn't love and some of the four minute (offense) there at the end, we didn’t look very smooth or clean at. Overall, we had a big win over a tough team on the road so it was really good for us. We just have to keep improving, keep getting better and taking it one game at a time."

The next game is a big one for Nix and the Broncos, if they believe they've turned an offensive corner. Denver will face the Kansas City Chiefs in an early battle for the division crown, as both teams have 5 wins. If the Broncos defeat the Chiefs, they will move into first place in the AFC West.

Can they pull out a huge victory on Sunday, and once again reestablish themselves at the top of the division? Time will tell.
