Reports: Michael Carrick to stay on as Manchester United manager - Is this the right decision?

According to multiple reports Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for their huge game at Chelsea on Saturday.

Reports from the BBC, Sky Sports and the Manchester Evening News, and others, say that Carrick took Manchester United training as normal on Tuesday and will be given the chance to turn things around at Old Trafford.

United have gone eight games without a win in all competitions and were hammered 3-0 at home by Bournemouth on Sunday.

The reaction from United’s fans at full time was to back Carrick, sing his name loudly and applaud him off the pitch. But the fans then turned on the players and booed them off, while also chanting against the ownership and decision makers at the club.

It will be intriguing to see how this all plays out over the coming days, but Carrick has been given at least one more game to try and prove he can turn things around at United.

Is giving Michael Carrick more time the right decision?

United are a mess and a lot of is not Carrick’s fault. The hierarchy above him have a lot to answer for after a summer of poor recruitment and failing to strengthen in the areas they needed to.

Letting Carrick carry on, for now, is not what most expected and United’s decision makers, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, have surprised everyone by not sacking Carrick.

First things first, Carrick has to get the situations with Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes sorted out. Both were on the bench for the defeat to Bournemouth and after their recent outbursts it was understandable.

But if Carrick can clear the air with Fernandes after his comments hitting out at Carrick’s tactics last week, and get Martinez focused and back to his best, United will be a better team for it.

As bad as it’s been so far this season for United, they will head to Chelsea knowing it will be a tight game and they will get plenty of chances to score on the counter attack. If there is one thing United have done well under Carrick over the last 12 months it’s scoring on the break.

Time will tell if this is the right call but Carrick probably deserves this opportunity to prove this poor run of results was a combination of a lack of form, a slow start to the season, confidence being hit and a bit of bad luck.
