Martin Brundle exposes Ferrari's Hamilton-Leclerc problem with fresh warning

Brundle has his say on what went down in Mexico City

F1 legend Martin Brundle has warned Ferrari that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will continue to clash, even if they hold crisis talks ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.

While F1 crowned a new world champion in Mexico City, another huge talking point coming out of Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix was more drama between the two Scuderia drivers.

There was tension after the Dutch and Italian Grands Prix earlier this season and that was the case again on Sunday, with the pair having battled hard from the start at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

On lap one, Leclerc tried to pass Hamilton on the outside into turn four but didn't make the corner, cutting across the grass and taking the lead by cutting turn five. Hamilton didn't make turn four, either, but he returned to the track for turn five and then lost P2 to Max Verstappen.

Immediately, Hamilton got on the radio to his engineer, fuming: "Pushed out by my own team-mate."

Hamilton was even less happy when the stewards only gave Leclerc a five-second penalty: "The stewards are basically handing Charles this win. We agreed in the drivers' briefing," a frustrated Hamilton told his team.

Martin Brundle says Ferrari drama cost Hamilton

Former F1 driver turned broadcaster Brundle was not present in Mexico to offer his opinion on what went down at the weekend, but he has since had the opportunity to do so on Sky Sports News.

Firstly, Brundle made it very clear he feels it cost Hamilton big time - a view the Ferrari driver also shared post-race.

“I think it cost them,” Brundle told Sky Sports News. “Max was pretty quick, but I think the scrabbling cost them because it cost Lewis track position quite badly, with Max.

“They both ran wide in turn four as Charles goes around the outside, Lewis went off as well, Charles should have given the place back, but he couldn't because cunning old Max Verstappen got himself in between the two Ferraris.”

Brundle continued: “They're hardwired racing drivers, and they race with… it's a curious business, where you perform as an individual totally in a team environment. You're measured as an individual, you're rewarded as an individual, and then when the adrenaline's up and the gap is there, as the great Ayrton Senna used to say, ‘If you don’t go for a gap you’re no longer a racing driver.’

“And that’s what they did. There's some frustration. Charles had some frustrations this year, so it doesn't look pretty for the team. It's like when Lando [Norris] ran into Oscar Piastri in Singapore in the Sprint race; it doesn't look pretty for the team, and you've let 1500 people down, and that's just the car side, without the power unit side.

“You’ve let people down in your team; you're the final link in the chain of your team, but you're the one out there that's got to deliver in the heat of the moment."

Martin Brundle: Ferrari drama will happen again

Post-race, Hamilton called for 'serious talks' to be had between himself, Leclerc and the team, and stated that issues would keep arising if those discussions were avoided.

Brundle, though, says that Ferrari can talk all they want, it will happen again regardless.

"Ferrari will have to manage that somehow," he continued. “They'll sit down and we'll go to Brazil, I go to Brazil, Wednesday, we'll head over there, and they will say, ‘yes, we sat down and understood it all, and we move forward. It won't happen again.'

"But in reality, we know that it will.”
