Eugenio Chacarra’s widely-ridiculed 2025 comments about Ludvig Aberg no longer look so farfetched

Eugenio Chacarra could secure his PGA Tour card for 2027 in some style in November by beating Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed to the Race to Dubai title.

It is Eugenio Chacarra who leads the Order of Merit on the DP World Tour with the finishing line in sight. Most recently, the Spaniard won the DP World India Championship for his third victory of the season.

It has been an outstanding year for the 26-year-old, but he will know that he will need to step his game up a level if he hopes to hit the ground running on the PGA Tour. Traditionally, it has not been easy for those moving across from the DP World Tour to make an impact in the United States.

What is clear is that Chacarra has silenced those of us who ridiculed him when he made comments about Ludvig Aberg back in January 2025.

Chacarra did not exactly handle his departure from LIV Golf particularly well. He criticised the league for failing to secure world ranking points and more pathways into the majors having received several promises when he signed up.

His contract was not renewed for 2025. And he went on to point out how different his trajectory was to Ludvig Aberg, despite some similarities.

“I’m a winner and I was never treated like a winner [on LIV],” he said. “On the PGA Tour, Ludvig Aberg has one win, and I have one win on LIV. He has one win on the European Tour, and I have one win on the International Series on the Asian Tour. So we have similar careers, but he has way more experience and plays way more big tournaments, but we have the same wins.

“We have performed similar. What tours I can play on, I have won. Same with him. But he’s the number six player in the world and everyone talks about him. But on LIV, I’m the only young guy who’s won, and they never talk about me. They always talk about the same guys. I’m not blaming them, they probably know more, but they don’t really care about the young guys much.

“So this decision is what’s best for me. I’m very thankful for what they’ve done, but my mind is different now and I want to get to what I was dreaming about when I was little. Because obviously LIV didn’t exist when I was growing up. I was watching Tiger Woods winning on the PGA Tour, and I want to do that.”

It was an extremely poor look from Chacarra. It seemed highly unlikely that he would have lashed out if Sergio Garcia had opted to keep him on the Fireballs.

It did not help that Aberg won the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines within two months of Chacarra’s comments.

However, there is surely no question at all that the gap has closed over the last 18 months. Aberg appears to have absolutely everything. He has also helped Europe win the last two Ryder Cups.

But Aberg has not won again since the Genesis. Unfortunately, when he has put himself in a position to win, he has often made incredibly costly mistakes, most notably at The Players Championship this year.

Chacarra, meanwhile, has won four times on the DP World Tour since leaving LIV. He may not be as fun to watch as Aberg, and he certainly does not make the game look as easy as the Swede, but that knowledge of how to get across the line when the moment presents itself is an underrated skill.

This is not to say that Chacarra is as good as Aberg. He has a lot to prove on the PGA Tour before that conversation can even begin.

But you can understand why Chacarra looked at Aberg’s career with a degree of envy when he left LIV. It would be little surprise if they were both part of the European team at the 2027 Ryder Cup.
