Antonio Conte has now clarified reports linking him to the Manchester United job as pressure mounts on Michael Carrick.

Manchester United’s search for consistency has become a defining issue of their season, with Michael Carrick facing growing scrutiny after a disappointing run of results.

The pressure surrounding Old Trafford has inevitably fuelled speculation about who could take charge if the club’s hierarchy decides a change is necessary.

Several experienced coaches have been mentioned as possible successors, giving United supporters plenty to debate as uncertainty continues to surround Carrick’s position.

Antonio Conte is among the names attracting attention, with the Italian’s record of winning major trophies making him an intriguing option for a club desperate to restore its former standards.

However, the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager has not publicly committed himself to an immediate return to the dugout.

His next move remains a talking point across European football, with Manchester United and Juventus featuring in recent speculation.

Antonio Conte has now clarified his position on his managerial future by writing on his Instagram story, insisting that no negotiations have reached an advanced stage while dismissing reports about demands he has supposedly made to interested clubs.

“My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage.

“Following a wonderful and successful spell in charge of Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management.

“It will be a carefully considered decision, one I will make when I believe the conditions are right.

“I have read reports of financial demands and requests for full control that I have supposedly already made to the clubs mentioned, as well as reservations about what has been described as my “strong personality”.

“These reports are unfounded, as there is currently no concrete basis for such assessments.

“Should a concrete opportunity arise, that will be the time to hold discussions with the club concerned and jointly consider the terms of a potential agreement, with due regard for both parties’ needs and the qualities and approach that define my work as a manager.

“Until then, any assumptions about my demands and my professional future remain speculation and cannot be treated as fact”.

Some reports have claimed that Conte would be open to taking the job, while speculation has also surrounded possible contact between people representing him and the club.

However, Conte’s latest comments make it clear that reports of advanced negotiations or established terms should not be treated as confirmed developments.

His statement does not rule out a future move to Old Trafford, but it also offers no confirmation that United are close to appointing him.

The 57-year-old has extensive experience in English football.

He led Chelsea to the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season and won the FA Cup the following campaign, before taking charge of Tottenham Hotspur between 2021 and 2023.

Conte is also known for his success in Italy, having won league titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.

Conte’s most recent role was at Napoli, where he took charge in 2024 and led the club to the Serie A title in his first season.

Napoli also won the Italian Super Cup during his tenure, underlining the success of his spell in Naples.

His second campaign ended with Napoli finishing second in Serie A behind Inter Milan.

Conte subsequently confirmed his departure, with the club announcing in June 2026 that they had reached an agreement to part ways with him and his staff before the end of their contracts.

Conte is not the only experienced manager whose name has been linked with the United job.

Reports have also identified Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Unai Emery as potential options if the club decides Carrick cannot turn the season around.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and former Manchester United figure Kieran McKenna have also featured in reports about possible alternatives.

Conte’s statement leaves the door open to a return to management while rejecting claims that he has already laid down conditions for his next appointment.
