Two-time undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has turned the tables on the notion his career is winding down by calling for a clash with David Benavidez.
Usyk 25-0 (16 KOs) first campaigned at heavyweight in 2019 after claiming all four belts at 200 pounds.
He went on to sweep boxing's top division, becoming undisputed champion twice with two wins apiece over Brits Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois.
After relinquishing his titles in June, Usyk, 39, said he would have a "last dance" which was expected to be at heavyweight.
However, in a stunning move, the Ukrainian's advisor, Sergey Lapin, has now outlined Usyk's desire to chase more titles at cruiserweight as well as a mega-fight with unbeaten champion Benavidez 32-0 (26 KOs).
"Oleksandr aims to return to cruiserweight in 2027 and become undisputed again," Lapin said.
"First, we are looking at a fight for a vacant world title. Then, the goal is to face David Benavidez to unify all the belts and become undisputed cruiserweight champion.
"We see 2027 as the final chapter of his career. He wants to finish as undisputed champion in the division where he first won all the belts."
Benavidez holds the WBO and WBA titles at 200 lbs and will fight Michał Cieślak for the WBC strap on Dec. 5.
The IBF belt, which Usyk now seems intent on collecting, is vacant.
Benavidez has also said he sees himself moving up to heavyweight in the future and said he would want to fight Usyk.
It now appears the 29-year-old, who has become one of boxing's biggest stars, won't have to.
