Celtic’s official video of Martin O’Neill’s Friday press conference leaves out an interesting moment in which the manager joked about the effect of facing questions from journalists.
The Hoops boss was speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premiership trip to Falkirk when he was asked about Celtic’s performances and the possibility of extending their four-point lead at the top of the table.
Catch up on Martin O'Neill's return as Celtic manager in full.
But it was his response to the tone of the questioning that produced one of the more entertaining moments of the afternoon.
And that particular exchange does not appear in the version published on Celtic’s official YouTube channel.
In Celtic’s YouTube video, O’Neill says:
“I come in here every single week and I’m most of the time pretty buoyed by things.”
The footage then moves directly to his next point.
“Don’t try and throw a lot of divides in at the end of the day. We’re doing fine.”
However, accounts of the press conference published elsewhere include an additional joke between those two remarks.
The Celtic Way’s transcript records O’Neill admitting that he does not always feel quite so cheerful by the time the questioning finishes.
Other coverage includes a longer version in which he jokes about wanting to put a bag over his head, before immediately assuring those present that he would not.
It was a light-hearted response to questions about Celtic’s recent performances rather than an indication of any serious problem.
The passage is absent from Celtic’s published video.
There has been no explanation from the club about the missing footage, and it is not known who made the decision over what was included in the final upload.
O’Neill’s comment was clearly intended as a joke, but a short clip about wanting to put a bag over his head could easily take on a different meaning if circulated without the surrounding context.
From a club media perspective, it would be understandable to avoid a remark that might distract from the manager’s actual message.
That does not mean there was anything particularly controversial about what he said.
There is also an important different between Celtic’s official media output and independent coverage of a press conference.
The club decides how to present its own material, while journalists attending the event can report the exchanges as they heard them.
Nevertheless, the difference is interesting when the official upload is presented as a full media conference.
It is also worth pointing out that Celtic’s version includes comments about the Fleetwood pitch invasion that do not appear in other written transcripts.
What we can establish is that one of O’Neill’s more amusing responses from Friday’s questioning was left out of the published footage.
His underlying message was unchanged. Celtic are four points clear, he believes the squad is still developing, and he was determined not to let questions about performances turn into suggestions of division within the club.
