Lewis Hamilton is hoping to fight for a podium finish at the United States Grand Prix, despite acknowledging the challenges awaiting Ferrari in Austin.

Hamilton starts Sunday's race from fifth on the grid, one place behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. The Briton showed encouraging pace during the weekend, topping the final practice session, but was unable to challenge for pole position in qualifying.

With Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen occupying the front row, Hamilton faces strong competition as he looks to move forward. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about Ferrari's chances of securing a top-three finish.

"I'm hoping we can challenge for a podium, it'd be awesome. But it's going to be tough, it's definitely going to be really tough. We just have to see where we go."

Hamilton explains his final preparations before lights out

During the drivers' parade, Hamilton was asked when he switches into racing mode and how he manages the pressure in the moments leading up to a Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver revealed that he uses the short period between the parade and the start procedure to settle his nerves and ensure that every aspect of his race plan is clear.

"Shortly after this parade, basically. You have to go back to your room. You have like 20 minutes to calm your nerves, get yourself, make sure you've covered all the strategy, and make sure you know, kind of, you set up your plan."

While the main strategic decisions are discussed earlier in the day, Hamilton explained that preparation alone is not enough. With several variables capable of influencing the outcome, he believes reacting quickly to unexpected developments will be essential.

"You set up your plan earlier in the day, but there's a lot of balls going to be up in the air today. And catching them and being agile and dynamic is going to be key."

Ferrari faces difficult task against Red Bull

Hamilton's optimism comes despite his concerns about Ferrari's straight-line performance following qualifying. The Briton highlighted Red Bull's advantage in this area, with Verstappen and Isack Hadjar qualifying ahead of both Ferrari drivers. The difference could make it more difficult for Hamilton to gain positions on track, increasing the importance of a competitive start and effective race strategy.
