The controversy around Troy Aikman and his spot in the broadcasting booth at ESPN being in jeopardy has been a rapidly developing storyline over the last few weeks. But while he still hasn’t received an extension offer from the network, a different path might be opening up for him.
With the Dallas Cowboys failing to emerge as a true contender in the NFC this year, the team is looking for solutions to turn things around. Now, their owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, isn’t ruling out a reunion in some capacity with his former quarterback.
More often than not this year, the Cowboys have come through on the offensive side of the ball. Currently ranked inside the top 3 of PFN’s Offense Impact Metrics, their problems amid their 3-4 start have been on the other side.
While it’s unfair to expect Aikman to come in and transform the franchise overnight, his history with the franchise could still serve to breathe some life into the Cowboys’ season. Jones certainly sees some merit in a move, as he spoke on the idea of adding the three-time champion to the Cowboys’ staff.
“Yes, I could and would,”he said about the idea during an appearance on “105.3 The Fan.” “It’s that simple because I do think that much of him and his command of NFL knowledge and football. He is qualified to do anything… don’t rule it out. It is very possible.”
The excitement from fans was immediate, as one fan wrote, “Y’all might finally get what many have been asking for… Troy joining the Cowboys front office, coming soon to an organization near you. There’s interest on both sides; it would be a money-printing move, and the fanbase would reach a fever pitch of excitement.”
With a large section of people clamouring for Jones to give up his role as the team’s general manager, their wishes haven’t come to pass just yet. As a result, one fan wasn’t opposed to the idea of Aikman taking over that role in all but name.
“Call him a consultant if Jerry doesn’t want to call him GM,” the fan argued. “Just get him in the building.”
However, others were less certain about the move becoming a reality, as one fan argued, “Jerry being Jerry and stirring the pot. I’m not taking anything from that comment other than he wants people to talk about it.”
Given that ESPN hasn’t yet offered a new deal to Aikman and his current contract runs out at the end of the 2026 season, some fans wondered if this was a way for Jones to give his former star quarterback some additional leverage in a potential negotiation.
“Helping his guy get some leverage,”one fan concluded, before praising, “Nice move, Jerry.”
But if it could become a reality, given his talent and experience alongside the intricate knowledge of the sport in his years from the commentary booth, fans were immediately on board with the idea.
While one fan wrote, “If Jerry is serious, this can and should be completed stat,” another fan explained, “Me thinks we need his no-nonsense way of speaking.”
One fan went into detail, adding, “Would be a potentially great move if they give him the keys to the car and let him drive. Have a lot of faith that 8 could implement the kind of culture change this organization sorely needs.”
It remains to be seen if Jones is serious about making that addition to his staff in the near future. But for the time being, it is an interesting wrinkle for both the Cowboys and the commentary role Aikman currently has.
