Newcastle reach Matthias Jaissle sack decision after Everton defeat as 'complete agreement' reached

Newcastle United’s hierarchy has reportedly decided whether they will sack Matthias Jaissle after the Magpies’ defeat to Everton on Monday, November 2.

Thierno Barry’s strike ensured Everton secured a second win over Newcastle in the space of four days on Monday night. Newcastle were booed by their own supporters at St James’ Park after a toothless performance.

The result saw Newcastle slump to 13th in the league, with the side having won just once since September. That victory came against Crystal Palace on October 25.

Newcastle’s hierarchy make Matthias Jaissle sack decision

Sections of the fanbase have called Jaissle’s position into question, but it appears the German will be given more time to turn the club’s fortunes around this season.

As reported by The Chronicle, Jaissle retains the full backing of the club’s hierarchy, with CEO David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson prepared to remain patient with the 38-year-old.

The club’s hierarchy believes the poor results are down to everyone involved, rather than just the head coach.

This comes after The Telegraph reported that the playing squad believe the gambles the club took in the summer transfer window are the main reason for the slow start to the season.

Newcastle spent £265million, while key players Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon moved on. Alexander Isak left for Liverpool in 2025.

Newcastle return to action against Fulham on November 7.

Matthias Jaissle admits Newcastle players ignored instructions in Everton defeat

Speaking after his side’s defeat, Jaissle claimed his players reverted to long balls instead of following his instructions, leaving Will Osula starved of service for much of the night.

Jaissle said: “Long balls was not the plan. It's something we need to work on. We lack confidence; to come out of that, we need to stick together. We need to make a fast learning curve in the right direction.

“We could not bring him into situations. We need to jump the first lines with clear balance on how we want to play football. Just playing long balls is for sure not the sign he (Osula) prefers.

“And it was not the plan; that is something you clearly need to mention. This is now the next step to clearly analyse it in-depth, and ask why we could not start the game as we originally planned.”

Reacting to the booing from the supporters, he added: “I was aware of the anger. Big frustration, big disappointment because we couldn't transfer what we saw in the week.

“The team was training at a high level, but since the ref started the game, not much was seen. It's difficult to understand. Of course the fans are frustrated, like we are.

“Unfortunately, we couldn't deliver. Actually, over the whole 90 minutes, it was not our game and our style of playing. That is something we are very frustrated and disappointed about. If you cannot deliver when it counts, then you don't deserve to win. We were not brave enough in possession, too many long balls.”
