Manchester United’s clash with AS Roma may have provided much joy on the field but away from the action, Greater Manchester Police had to step in.
United’s victory over Roma was their first in nine games, ending a rout that led all the way back to their opening Champions League tie against Sabah at Old Trafford.
During that time, pressure that continued to pile on the club’s ownership with some critical of their approach to the summer transfer window and season so far.
Protests took place earlier this season before the Red Devils’ clash with local rivals Manchester City, whilst a social media campaign has seen many turn against the club’s ownership online.
Some chose to make their anger heard on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford, before and during the Roma clash, with Greater Manchester Police now confirming to The Athletic that 11 arrests were made.
Three of those detainments were for throwing items onto the pitch, whilst a further four people were arrested for various assault offences.
Two others were also detained for public order offences whilst one for arrested for a drugs offence.
Manchester United will host Aston Villa at Old Trafford tomorrow in the Premier League as they aim for their first league victory since the end of August.
It remains to be seen whether the same levels of anger toward the club’s ownership, seen against Bournemouth and Roma, will be on display tomorrow.
With tensions continuing to rise between supporters and those at the top, tomorrow’s game will signal whether Tuesday’s event was an isolated incident or the sign of further unrest.
The visit of Aston Villa provides supporters with another opportunity to make their feelings known, especially if results on the field continue to not improve.
Victory against Roma may have provided temporary relief, but the issues surrounding the club’s hierarchy remain firmly unresolved.
The challenge now is to not only find consistent success on the field, but to also restore the trust of a fanbase that is increasingly losing patience.
