Enniskillen beat Skerries 29-21 in home rugby victory

Facing an experienced side with a 20-year AIL pedigree, Skins were forced into another reshuffle to cover a number of absentees.

Sam Balfour moved to full-back, with Morgan Whittaker and Harry Ingram occupying the wing positions.

Adam Chester continued at out-half in the absence of Eddie Keys, while Peter Read came into the pack for Niall Keenan.

Skerries arrived with a big, abrasive pack and were clearly intent on taking something from the contest.

However, Skins made a flying start, with Sam Balfour's outstanding running proving a constant threat throughout.

Collecting a kick on eight minutes, he danced his way through the visitors' defence before providing James Trotter with a try-scoring pass.

Chester added the conversion.

Play was fairly even over the following six minutes, with Skerries' line-out proving solid and out-half Joe May moving the ball quickly.

However, Skins extended their advantage on 12 minutes when Chester landed a penalty.

The home side's defence was proving stubborn, snuffing out any threat from the visitors.

Both scrum-halves looked to use the box-kick, but Enniskillen were gaining the greater reward.

Henry Keys was on Balfour's shoulder on this occasion to run in the second try after 14 minutes, which Chester again converted.

Skerries responded shortly afterwards with a converted try of their own.

The Enniskillen front row of Timoney, Read and Stanley were getting the better of their opposite numbers, ensuring a good supply of possession for the home side.

Following a series of attacks, Chester spotted Harry Ingram in space on the left and delivered an excellent kick-pass for the winger to gather and score in the corner on the half-hour mark.

Chester added the extras.

Enniskillen enjoyed the better of the closing stages of the first half and looked certain to add another try before the break, but Skerries somehow managed to hold them out.

The visitors came out strongly after the restart and, following a spell of pressure, Leonard crossed for a try converted by May.

Cameron Smith, Simon McIlveen and Tomás Scallon were introduced, with little separating the sides over the next ten minutes.

Michael Rooney made several powerful carries before Balfour produced the moment of the match on 53 minutes.

Once again gathering a Skerries kick, he launched a thrilling counter-attack, this time finishing the move himself to score and put Skins 29-14 ahead.

Skerries responded with a number of substitutions and began to enjoy more possession, forcing Enniskillen to dig deep defensively.

The home side put in the tackles but could not prevent the visitors' forward Twomey from crossing for a third try, although there appeared to be a question mark over a possible knock-on in the build-up.

With the score now 29-21 and at least ten minutes remaining, the contest was far from over.

Andy Dane was introduced and the Skins scrum continued to hold firm, although Skerries appeared to have more of the possession and territory during the closing stages.

Nevertheless, Enniskillen saw out the game to secure another hard-earned victory, built on determined defensive work and a touch of Sam Balfour magic.

Enniskillen squad: O. Timoney, P. Read, W. Stanley, Chris Balfour, Clarke Balfour, J. Rutledge, H. Keys, M. Rooney, M. McConkey, A. Chester, H. Ingram, J. Trotter, J. Ferguson (captain), M. Whittaker, Sam Balfour, T. Harte, S. McIlveen, A. Dane, C. Smith, T. Scallon.
