Championship: West Ham come from three down to draw at Cardiff, Boro beaten, Wolves win from behind

Wolves celebrate

Bonfire Night was celebrated a day early in the Championship.

We saw rockets, bangers, a bright spark fizzling out and a slow burner which eventually sparked into an inferno.

The real thing will surely be a damp squib after that.

Middlesbrough suffered a set-back with defeat at resurgent Wrexham (who breathe fire, by the way) and Wolves are now hot on their heels after a last-gasp win at beleaguered Bristol City.

And then there's West Ham. Yesterday morning Nuno Espirito Santo woke up as Hammers boss, tonight Scott Parker goes to bed as Hammers boss after overseeing a thrilling comeback from 3-0 down to draw at Cardiff in his first day in the job.

There's nothing quite like the Championship.

We'll be back on Friday night for a cracking battle between Derby and Bolton.

Until then, goodnight!

There was so much talk of the pressure mounting on Phil Parkinson ahead of tonight's match.

But my word, his players well and truly delivered for him tonight.

They were excellent in that second half and fully deserved the three points.

The experienced manager undertook a lap around the stadium to applaud the home fans after the full time whistle.

Boro sorely missed Will Lankshear in all honesty, but they remain at the top of the table with 14 games gone.

They might just do this you know.

After the Hammers have a corner cleared Jarrod Bowen swings in an absolutely delicious curling cross from the right, with his left foot, which swirls past the defence and draws the keeper off his line but is perfect for Max Kilman, of all people, to pop up with a striker's finish, cushioning the ball into the top corner from eight yards out.

The Cardiff players look very quiet as they trudge back for the kick-off. Very quiet. West Ham believe.

Rona Kpakio comes on for Perry Ng for the hosts, who has been struggling for the past couple of minutes with a knock.

David Turnbull is also on in place of Calum Scanlon for Brian Barry-Murphy's side as they seek to shore the game up, still ahead by a goal.

Boro stopper Radek Vitek palms away Kieffer Moore's stinging strike but Lewis O'Brien is quick to pounce.

O'Brien, who came close in the first half, supplies a clinical finish to conduct the crowd into a crescendo.

Not for long though. He's ruled offside when the first shot was made.

A shame, it was a great finish.

This West Ham team are an absolute mess. There is no improvement defensively from last season and the forwards can’t score goals. You can’t expect Bowen to bail you out all the time. This is a huge job to fix.

How much did this West Ham side cost? Our recruitment has been embarrassing for years. £100m for Rice and it's gone to players like Fullkrug, Solomon, and Kilman.

Can you change 11 players at half time?

It all threatens to kick off at the Kassam in League One as Reading's Josh Stokes makes a late challenge on Cameron Brannagan and the Oxford man is fuming.

The two have to be pulled apart and receive a warning from referee Darren Drysdale while both sets of fans are on their feet roaring at the confrontation.

Both escape any punishment and we play on. We're yet to see a significant scoring chance in this one for either side, with the battle taking place mostly in the middle of the park.

There's a bit of needle as Neto Borges wins a free-kick in a nice little area in the Wrexham half.

It's looking a bit heated but no need for cards as they all calm down after the referee gets involved.

It's delivered well as Sebastian Berhalter finds the head of Adilson Malanda but it's into the keeper's gloves.

First shot on target. The forwards have been kept quiet so far, for both sides.

It's happened again... and this is an absolute ROCKET.

Welcome to West Ham, Scott Parker. The Irons have gone behind in the first half for the 11th time in 17 games.

Jack Moylan is picked out by Alex Robertson just outside the D, takes a touch and unleashes a genuinely unstoppable shot into the top corner past Mads Hermansen's despairing right hand.

Superb strike, his fourth in five games, and the Hammers are up against it once again.

Scott Parker shouting and pointing on the sideline while coaching Burnley

As soon as the news broke that Nuno Espirito Santo had been relieved of his duties at West Ham it became clear that the club had identified Scott Parker as the coach they believed could lead them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The only nagging question for me was why this move was not made in the summer, giving Parker time to build a squad he would want and have pre-season to prepare them.

Parker's pedigree of guiding clubs to promotion from the second tier in his first full year in charge is unquestionable having done it at Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. These achievements were at clubs where there was an expectation of success so the fact that West Ham have the same aim this season will not faze him.

He follows in the footsteps of the great Billy Bonds, the only other former captain to go on and manage West Ham. Bonds was also charged with gaining promotion, something he achieved.

There is no doubt where the issues have been for West Ham so far this season, starting games slowly, conceding first and on a number of occasions conceding too many.

Parker will bring structure and clarity to the team, providing a stable platform from which the front line can start exploiting their talents. He will want to quickly create an identity and will leave players in no doubt that hard work and commitment lead to positive outcomes.

The question of 'style' had been on the lips of a number of people in regards to Parker and much was made of Burnley's incredible parsimony during their promotion to the Premier League under him, but they were also the third highest scorers and gained 100 points, which is no mean feat.

He has players at his disposal to be effective going forward, and the coaching ability to make a rather leaky side more watertight.

The fans and the club will hope that is the perfect formula.

Scott Parker at West Ham, Middlesbrough and Wolves trying to get back to the Premier League, Bristol City middle of the pack in the Championship...

No, we have not travelled back to 2009, this is the new normal in late 2026 - we can be sure of that as Wrexham are also in the Championship and not the National League, as they were 17 years ago.

We have three big games in the second tier for you this evening, plus a bonus cracker in League One too.

There's plenty to get through so let's get you up to speed...
