Arsenal secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League, and fans were delighted to see the return of a set-piece goal.
Ezri Konsa opened the scoring from a corner after a flick-on by Gabriel Magalhaes, and that was the Gunners’ first non-penalty set-piece strike of the season.
For a club that were constantly labelled ‘Set-piece FC’ in the last two campaigns, the lack of goals from such situations in their first 12 games had become a worry.
However, after Konsa’s opener against Everton, fans on TalkingPoints have suggested that the Premier League champions’ biggest weapon has been rediscovered. That is a problem for Manchester City.

Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 to go level at the top with Man City! What is your INSTANT reaction to that performance? 🤩 Defensive masterclass yet again…
Arsenal’s set-piece goal against Everton highlighted the importance of dominating the game.
Before the game on Saturday, the Gunners had averaged just five corners per game in the Premier League this season. But just in the first half against the Toffees, they won 10 corners. (Sam Dean on X)
Konsa scored early, in the seventh minute, but Arsenal continued to trouble David Moyes’ side and came close to finding the net from such situations a few more times.
The North Londoners were dangerous through indirect free-kicks too. Just before the break, Mikel Merino came close to scoring from a Declan Rice free-kick.
Although Arsenal’s non-penalty set-piece goal tally only stands at one, there are serious signs that they are creating plenty of chances from dead-ball situations.
Earlier this month, before the game against Leeds, Mikel Arteta claimed that Arsenal should’ve scored four set-piece goals already this season.
The Gunners boss claimed after the game on Saturday that his side should’ve scored twice against Bayern Munich from similar situations as well.
The win over Everton showed a serious step in the right direction, with Arsenal generating 0.79xG from set-pieces alone – far more than their previous fixtures. (Opta)
Manchester City are expected to be Arsenal’s biggest challengers for the Premier League title this season, and the two sides are currently level on points.
Enzo Maresca’s side have scored more league goals than the Gunners from set pieces (3) while also dominating most games in open play.
Yet, they aren’t even a point above the reigning champions, which should be a big worry for City, especially as the Gunners are rediscovering their set-piece prowess.
If Nicolas Jover gets them firing in that department again, just like he did last season, the champions could run away with the title.
City’s loss against Aston Villa has come at the right time for Arsenal. Maresca’s men have a gruelling fixture list coming up, with back-to-back games against Brighton before away trips to RB Leipzig and Nottingham Forest.
None of those games will be easy, especially the two league games against the Premier League sides.
Arsenal have a tough game against Liverpool too, but with Andoni Iraola’s side leaking goals for fun and the Gunners looking good from set pieces again, they will be the favourites. The other league fixture is against Hull City at home, which the hosts should comfortably win.
So, by the time we head into the international break, if things go Arsenal’s way, they could find themselves six points clear of City. That could well be the end of the title race, even though it’s this early in the season.
