India and New Zealand have shared a competitive rivalry in ODI cricket, producing several memorable encounters across bilateral series and major tournaments. While both teams have been known for their strong batting lineups, bowlers have also played a crucial role in deciding the outcome of these contests.

Over the years, several bowlers have delivered match-winning spells against these two sides, with some producing remarkable wicket hauls while conceding very few runs. From devastating fast-bowling spells to impressive performances by spinners, here is a look at the five best bowling figures recorded in India vs New Zealand ODIs.

Top 5 best bowling figures in NZ vs IND ODIs

1. Mohammed Shami (India) – 7/57

Mohammed Shami holds the record for the best bowling figures in India vs New Zealand ODIs after producing a sensational 7/57 in the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Defending a massive target of 398, India faced a strong challenge from New Zealand, with Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell building a threatening partnership.

Shami broke the stand by dismissing Williamson before continuing to trouble the New Zealand batting lineup with his movement and accuracy. He eventually finished with seven wickets in 9.5 overs, helping India bowl out the Black Caps for 327 and secure a 70-run victory. His performance also became the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in ODI World Cup history, taking India into the final.

2. Shane Bond (New Zealand) – 6/19

Shane Bond produced one of the most devastating fast-bowling performances against India during the Videocon Tri-Series in Bulawayo on August 26, 2005. Playing at the Queens Sports Club, the New Zealand speedster dismantled India’s batting lineup with a remarkable spell of 6/19 in nine overs.

Bond made an immediate impact by removing key batters, including Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag. His pace, bounce and accurate yorkers made scoring extremely difficult for the Indian batters as they were bowled out for just 146. Bond’s spell, which included three maidens, helped New Zealand secure a comprehensive victory and remains one of the finest bowling performances in this rivalry.

3. Amit Mishra (India) – 5/18

Amit Mishra produced a match-winning performance in the fifth ODI against New Zealand at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on October 29, 2016. With India defending a target of 270, the leg-spinner turned the contest into a one-sided affair by claiming five wickets for just 18 runs in six overs.

Mishra used the conditions effectively, extracting turn and bounce to trouble the New Zealand batters throughout his spell. The visitors struggled to cope with his variations and were bundled out for just 79 in 23.1 overs. His outstanding figures helped India register a massive 190-run victory, seal the series 3-2 and earned him the Player of the Match award.

4. Trent Boult (New Zealand) – 5/21

Trent Boult delivered a sensational spell during the fourth ODI against India at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 31, 2019. Taking advantage of the conditions, the left-arm pacer produced impressive swing and accuracy to claim five wickets for just 21 runs in his 10 overs, including four maidens.

Boult struck early by dismissing India’s opening batters Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, putting the visitors under immediate pressure. He continued to pick up wickets as India struggled to build partnerships and were eventually bowled out for just 92 in 30.5 overs. New Zealand chased down the target comfortably with eight wickets in hand, completing a dominant eight-wicket victory.

5. Andre Adams (New Zealand) – 5/22

Andre Adams features fifth on the list after producing an impressive spell of 5/22 against India in the fourth ODI at the Queenstown Events Centre on January 4, 2003. The New Zealand seamer made excellent use of the conditions, generating considerable movement off the surface to trouble the Indian batting lineup.

Adams bowled 8.4 overs, including one maiden, and repeatedly found breakthroughs as India struggled to build a competitive total. His five-wicket haul restricted the visitors to just 122 runs, leaving New Zealand with a straightforward chase. The hosts completed the target with seven wickets to spare, while Adams was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution.
