After years of heavy spending, Chelsea have assembled a squad packed with quality, including the likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro. Xabi Alonso’s side are therefore expected to secure a Champions League place at the very least this season.
However, not every talented player at Stamford Bridge receives the recognition they deserve. Palmer has now singled out one Chelsea midfielder he believes is particularly underrated, insisting few people realise just how good he really is.

Cole Palmer and three other Chelsea stars snubbed! What do you make of Thomas Tuchel's England squad? 🤔 Morgan Rogers does makes the squad, though.
Cole Palmer believes Romeo Lavia is Chelsea’s most underrated player, despite the midfielder costing £58 million when he joined from Southampton three years ago. That may be because Lavia has made just 36 Premier League appearances since arriving at Stamford Bridge in August 2023.
The Belgium international has endured a frustrating injury run, suffering problems with his hamstring, ankle and thigh, among several other issues. However, he recently completed back-to-back 90-minute appearances for the first time in his Chelsea career, featuring against Liverpool and Manchester United.
Lavia was particularly impressive against United, earning a 9/10 in The Chelsea Chronicle’s player ratings. He also recorded more than twice as many defensive contributions as any other player.
“Romeo, because nobody knows how good he actually is,” Palmer named Lavia as Chelsea’s most underrated player. “Obviously, I played with him at City, so maybe I have a bit of bias towards him, but he’s so good.”
When asked whether Lavia could become one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, Palmer responded: “I think he can this season if he stays fit.”
Chelsea supporters have long recognised Lavia’s exceptional talent and believe he could be the ideal midfield partner for Moises Caicedo when fully fit. The challenge now is for the 22-year-old to stay fit all season. If he can manage that, there is little doubt he will receive the recognition his ability deserves.
