Sharks Locker Room: San Jose Playing “Easy Way”, Trouba Gets “A”, Celebrini Real About Splitting WillMack

San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky seemed happy with just one player in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

“You want it the easy way,” Warsofsky said, of the Sharks getting outshot 40-23. “It’s not the easy way in the National Hockey League.”

Besides Yaroslav Askarov stopping 38-of-39 shots, the Sharks just didn’t generate enough 5-on-5 offense once again, and their piping-hot power play, 5-of-11 in their last three games, went cold.

After the game, Warsofsky spoke more about his displeasure in his team’s performance, Macklin Celebrini discussed playing away from Will Smith, Jacob Trouba talked about getting the “A” in Alex Wennberg’s absence, and Michael Kesselring was candid about his first game against his ex-team.

A deeper game story with micro-stats from Stathletes and game action clips, Sharks Insight, will be published soon.

Ryan Warsofsky

You got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. I think that’s the biggest thing. You want it the easy way. It’s not the easy way in the National Hockey League. It’s hard. It’s demanding. It’s every shift. It’s every period. It’s every day. It’s practice. It’s games. We need to work on being a little bit more competitive all over the ice.

We’re looking for home runs. We got to learn to play small ball, and then, those [stretch passes] will happen, naturally. It’s like every shift there, especially early in the game. We’re looking for a lot of home runs, and it’s just not the way you win in this league.

He was good, really good tonight. Gave us a chance. We need to lessen his workload. That’s for sure. But nice to see him, he’s locked in.

Macklin Celebrini

Reality was, we weren’t really creating much. Or, we weren’t scoring. When things aren’t working, you got to switch it up a little bit. I think it’s nothing really to read too much into. I think [it was] just a decision that was made to just try something new and shake it up. He’s a great player. That line can create as many chances as anyone.

It’s tough. I mean, some of those plays, if it gets through, then it’s a great play. But if it doesn’t work, then you’re kicking yourself.

Jacob Trouba

I don’t think you want to get too spaced out. Maybe every once in a while, you’ll catch one of those but wouldn’t say it’s a high percentage way to sustain offense.

That’d be a good idea [to break out closer together].

Michael Kesselring

It was hard in the first. It was pretty emotional, honestly, for me tonight. I thought in the second and third, I really started to get it going. Obviously, personally, I wanted to show that they made a mistake, but we didn’t win, and that’s what really matters.
