Football fans have reached a unanimous verdict after one Manchester United fan was spotted doing something bizarre during the side’s comeback victory over Roma.
It looked to be heading towards yet another disastrous evening for Michael Carrick and his side when Roma went 2-0 up after just 17 minutes at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes’ 58th-minute penalty then pulled one back for the home side, restoring some hope around Old Trafford.
United looked to be in the ascendancy during the final stages of the clash, with Matheus Cunha making it 2-2 with seven minutes to play after Leonardo Balerdi failed to clear Fernandes’ lofted ball.
From this point, there was only ever going to be one winner, with Shea Lacey’s smart pass setting up Cunha for his second and United’s third, handing Carrick’s side a much-needed victory.
While most supporters were overjoyed and caught up in the jubilant scenes at Old Trafford, one fan has been slated on social media for what he was doing during the game, prompting some fans to say, ‘Football is done.’
A photograph from inside the stadium emerged online showing one fan watching United content creator Mark Goldbridge during play.
One fan said: “Last season, a guy on my row was watching him at HT, and a few old blokes offered their opinion on what he was watching. He looked uncomfortable, to say the least.”
Another added: “Sums up United fans.”
A third claimed: “Is this the worst picture of all time?”
A fourth commented: “Sums up post-Fergie United.”
A fifth added: “Yeah, that’s embarrassing. Should have launched his phone!”
A sixth waded in: “Doesn’t affect your enjoyment of the game. Let them be.”
Man Utd return to action at home against Aston Villa on November 8.
While fans will be pleased with the result, the first half saw tennis balls thrown onto the pitch in protest at the Glazer family and the general state of the club, while thousands of green and gold balloons were displayed in the Stretford End before kick-off.
Fernandes surprised fans with a passionate interview after the victory, in which he backed Carrick’s previous decision to drop him for the Bournemouth match after he publicly questioned his tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como.
“We don't need to save anyone's job,” Fernandes told Amazon Prime post-match.
“We've been working so hard to get out of this situation altogether. It's been tough. There's been a lot of speculation in the media, a lot of lies around many things that have happened in this club. Between me and the manager, that we had to clear the air. Nothing like that happened.
“The manager took a decision of putting myself on the bench because I wasn't performing at that level. Everyone felt that it was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right.
“The manager is the one who makes the decisions. I have to accept them, I have to go forward with that. It doesn't change the belief I have in the manager, in the staff and every player that is in this club. It doesn't change my aim to f****** win every game that I have ahead of me. It should be [a turning point].”
Amazon’s Gabby Logan was forced to apologise after the strong language.
