Man Utd waste no time with sack decisions as Michael Carrick set to face the music

A common theme has emerged over Manchester United sackings as Michael Carrick clings on to his job

Manchester United chiefs are known for their swift action when it comes to dismissing managers following the final results of their reign. The dreadful 4-1 loss to Como may be the final chapter of Michael Carrick's tenure.

If the humiliating scoreline - amongst the most damaging in United's illustrious European history - wasn't damaging enough, it was compounded by internal conflict. Bruno Fernandes accused Carrick of tactical errors, while the manager responded by suggesting the players didn't run enough.

Carrick may be afforded extra time, but the manner in which he raised his hands in apology towards the travelling supporters indicated he believes his fate is sealed. Should that prove to be his last game in charge, he may not face a lengthy wait before receiving official confirmation.

United's decision-makers typically act decisively when wielding the axe. Here's a summary of how long the previous six permanent United managers waited...

Ruben Amorim

Amorim's fate was effectively decided even before his final match at the helm against Leeds in January. A tense exchange between him and Jason Wilcox on the Friday sparked alarm. And when Amorim publicly criticised the director of football during his post-match press conference, he was informed on the Monday morning, approximately 18 hours following the fixture.

Erik ten Hag

The Dutchman, whose recent remarks about a "toxic culture" in the dressing room prove particularly compelling reading following Wednesday's disaster, was likewise dismissed on a Monday after a Sunday loss.

With United languishing in 14th position after a 2-1 reverse against West Ham, Ten Hag was informed of his dismissal by chief executive Omar Berrada and then-sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The final pre-INEOS dismissal. Following a dismal opening to the 2021/22 campaign, Solskjaer recognised his tenure was over at the interval of United's 4-1 thrashing at Watford. He told The Athletic: "Nobody told me, but I knew at half-time against Watford. We didn't look like a Man United team."

Similar to Carrick versus Como, Solskjaer appeared apologetic before the United supporters after the match. The axe officially fell the following day when he was summoned to a meeting by Ed Woodward.

Jose Mourinho

Perhaps owing to his reputation in football - or the expense of terminating his contract - Mourinho was relieved of his duties almost two days following his final fixture, a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, which left the side 19 points adrift of their bitter rivals.

Louis van Gaal

Amongst the more ruthless dismissals, given the Dutchman had just lifted the FA Cup. Less than 24 hours afterwards, he was informed his services were no longer needed. Official confirmation emerged on Monday, with Mourinho appointed the following day.

David Moyes

After suffering a 2-0 loss at former club Everton, Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement was formally dismissed fewer than 48 hours later in a meeting with Woodward. Moyes had already sensed what was coming, having read reports of his impending sacking in the press the previous day.
