Rangers fans could be forgiven for raising their eyebrows at Friday’s extraordinary Nicolas Raskin press conference. The Belgian midfielder faced repeated questions about his future, his contract and his desire to leave Ibrox. Yet nobody from the club intervened. Indeed, the entire episode produced a rather bizarre Rangers Raskin press conference spectacle.
It is hardly unusual for journalists to question players about their futures. However, Friday’s session took things considerably further.
Raskin faced at least six separate questions about his contract, summer transfer speculation and potential January departure.
Furthermore, journalists returned to the same subject repeatedly, despite the Belgian already providing perfectly reasonable answers.
He explained his summer ambitions, acknowledged his desire for a new challenge and discussed his happiness at Rangers.
Nevertheless, the questions continued.
This is surely the most intriguing aspect of the whole situation.
Rangers employ a media team to manage these conferences. Consequently, someone presumably has responsibility for maintaining reasonable boundaries.
Yet nobody appeared willing to intervene when journalists repeatedly questioned Raskin about essentially the same subject.
Indeed, the Rangers Raskin press conference became something resembling an extended transfer interrogation rather than a conventional preview of St Johnstone’s visit.
Why did nobody simply ask the journalists to move on?
After all, Raskin had already answered their questions.
To his credit, the Belgian international handled everything remarkably well.
He never became visibly frustrated and consistently maintained his respect for Rangers.
Furthermore, he credited the Ibrox club with helping him establish himself internationally.
However, his most revealing answer concerned a potential contract extension.
Rather than rejecting the suggestion, Raskin claimed the decision rested with Rangers.
That certainly raised eyebrows.
Nevertheless, the media continued exploring his future despite already receiving an intriguing response.
Perhaps Rangers deliberately allowed their midfielder to address everything publicly. However, that remains speculation rather than anything the club has confirmed.
Ultimately, the Rangers Raskin press conference raises legitimate questions about the club’s media management.
Nobody expects Rangers to prevent journalists from asking difficult questions. Equally, nobody expects the club to surrender control of its own media events.
Yet Friday’s proceedings suggested remarkably little intervention.
Raskin effectively answered variations of the same question six times before journalists finally concentrated on football.
Indeed, his contract situation dominated the opening exchanges despite Rangers facing an important Premiership encounter.
Consequently, supporters might reasonably wonder why the club permitted such extensive questioning.
Raskin certainly deserves credit for his composure.
However, Rangers’ media representatives might have shown considerably more authority.
After all, the Belgian had already made his position abundantly clear.
And surely once should have been enough?
